Dan Chabanov’s Lens – Training and Racing in Arizona for Foundation
I’ve been a long time fanboy of Dan Chabanov, in case you can’t tell. He rode through the alleycat rankings in NYC, raced at Kissena and then moved rapidly up through the road racing circuit. Last year, he even raced for Richard Sachs. Before the Red Hook Crit, he and his Foundation teammates went to Arizona to train and race.
While Dan was there, he shot some disposable cameras for me and when I was in NYC last month, he dropped them off on me. These four rolls follow Dan on solo rides through Oro Valley to Oracle, on training rides with his team, in hotels, back porch haircuts and finally, a 75-minute long crit.
The thing that’s most interesting to me about the subject is that Dan’s a bike racer with a photography background. His playful and whimsical photographs really paint a portrait of what it’s like to travel, train and race. For me, this was a very compelling Guest Gallery. I love that they disassemble their bikes completely and fit them in suitcases. Brilliant.

TCB in NYC
I hung out with Chas from TCB Courier / MASH / #fixiefamous a lot in NYC during the Red Hook Crit weekend. He’s one of my favorite dudes to hang with. Why? He’s always down to drink, loves to talk shit to Crihs and his riding style is very photogenic. These few photos were taken on a quick ride through Brooklyn but are damn rad.

Rai’s Bianchi Concept
I’m in SF now and it’s only fitting that I post about a Bianchi Concept. I feel like these bikes gained popularity here on the hilly streets of the Mission, moreso than the track, where they were intended to be ridden. The last time I was here, I shot Rai’s RC D2 Pista. He was in search for a Concept at the time but couldn’t find one. A few weeks back, he bought this bike from Marc Marino to fund Marc’s Red Hook Crit and here it is, chilling in the alley outside of Mission Workshop.

TCB Steve is #FixieFamous
The whole week I was in NYC, I couldn’t get over how rad the SF to NYC connection was working out for people. Chas and Steve came over to race Monster Track this year and stayed for the Red Hook Crit. They work for TCB Courier in SF and decided to work in the city with various independent messenger companies while they were in town. These two got thrown in the fire and had to learn the ways of the streets almost immediately. But they’re resilient and took every lesson in stride. After he settled in a bit, I met up with Steve on 15th street to see how he was adjusting to the NYC hustle. He’s working for Clementine Courier and has been on his hustle. As I said, dude’s resilient and you’ve gotta be when you’re #FixieFamous.

Velo News Doesn’t Know What a Track Bike Is
This is a track bike, not a fixed gear
I saw an article on Velo News (no, I won’t link to it) about the Red Hook Crit and it angered me to read such incompetent journalism.
“And gone this year were tight jeans, sneakers and the other garb synonymous with “alley cat” style races. Skinsuits and matching lycra were the styles of choice for participants.”
First of all, it’s not an “alley cat” and people never wore jeans to race the RHC, at least not the serious racers (Nick doesn’t count). It’s always been a serious race and quotes like this undermine the event. It’s as back-handed as you can get. Second of all, these TRACK BIKES were all USAC-legal for a mass-start race and everyone was pushing heavy track gearing. Don’t mistaken a bike that’s ridden on the street for fun with a bike that is built to race. And if you’re going to write an article on a widely-read news source, don’t get an idiot to source quotes, only to have him misquote people. Frederick Dreier, stick to what you know and that’s not track bikes.

A Wheel Comes to Life
While Dan’s bike is ready to rip at the 2012 Red Hook Crit, JT’s wheels are still being built, or born, rather. Shawn from King Kog in Brooklyn has built many racing wheels in his day and JT knows exactly what he wants, well, most of the time. While Shawn was at work, I gave this process some lens love. It was like watching a chrysalis being formed…

Man, I feel like this year there were more photographers at Monster Track than before. I know Tak and Ed Glazar had to be there (we’ll probably see those later on) and Cycle Angelo‘s are looking good but I’m really into the ones that Red Hook Crit organizer David Trimble took. Look at JT wearing blue sweatpants just so he could match his Legor Cicli track bike.
JT, what happened man? I hear Crihs had a 12-minute spread. Did you stop for a cup of coffee?
