Valles Caldera National Preserve Initiates Wilderness Eligibility Assessment; Requests Public Input
The Valles Caldera, a wonderful place to ride a bike, is doing a wilderness evaluation and is asking for public input. Info to be found here at NPS.
Our friend Kyle Klain succinctly summarized his message to the NPS, which you could copy and paste:
While most of us don’t inherently oppose wilderness designation, it does ban cycling, and the area within the Valles has been a great spot for riding big loops, bikepacking, and fishing. Given the opportunities discussed to open up old logging roads, developing backcountry campsites, and potentially connector trails, I personally believe wilderness designation would be an unnecessary designation for the area–particularly due to the existing infrastructure and roads it does not seem to qualify for wilderness.
If you have additional comments about the wilderness quality please use this link to send your comments to the US Forest Service.
