Lab8 from Milano interviewed Dave Trimble, founder of the world’s best track bike criterium, the Red Hook Crit. Dave talks about the races humble beginnings as a birthday celebration for him, the current state, Dan’s win and where he plans on taking it in the future.

This is a track bike, not a fixed gear
I saw an article on Velo News (no, I won’t link to it) about the Red Hook Crit and it angered me to read such incompetent journalism.
“And gone this year were tight jeans, sneakers and the other garb synonymous with “alley cat” style races. Skinsuits and matching lycra were the styles of choice for participants.”
First of all, it’s not an “alley cat” and people never wore jeans to race the RHC, at least not the serious racers (Nick doesn’t count). It’s always been a serious race and quotes like this undermine the event. It’s as back-handed as you can get. Second of all, these TRACK BIKES were all USAC-legal for a mass-start race and everyone was pushing heavy track gearing. Don’t mistaken a bike that’s ridden on the street for fun with a bike that is built to race. And if you’re going to write an article on a widely-read news source, don’t get an idiot to source quotes, only to have him misquote people. Frederick Dreier, stick to what you know and that’s not track bikes.

Dan Chabanov has won the Red Hook Crit for the third time, meaning he now has three prize bikes. Each year, Cinelli donates a complete build to the winner and year after year, the bikes keep getting better. The 2012 trophy bike was already in King Kog‘s window when I went by on Sunday, so I took it out for some lens love.

The last time I was at the Red Hook Crit, it was a small, intimate race through the dark, cobbled streets of Red Hook, Brooklyn. And even though I’ve paid close attention to the past two year’s event, I was not prepared to be greeted with a large, well-lit, legitimate closed course criterium. 20 laps of fast-paced track bike racing greeted me, complete with the standard spills and thrills. I feel like this year, more than before, the community as a whole embraced the event, sparking riders to travel from SF, LA and even as far as Italy and Spain. With Dan Chabanov defending his title, his competition came mostly from the legs of Mash‘s Rainier. With one lap to go, Dan’s solo gap was enough to seal his victory and Rainier took a solid second place. See the full results here.
It was the first time I’ve ever shot an event like this at night, so I wanted to try a few ideas out in field and for the most part, I’m pleased with the outcome.

I just got in from the 2012 Red Hook Crit Dinner Celebration and I’m a little drunk, very tired and anxious for what tomorrow night will bring. The general vibe at this year’s dinner was quite intimate, drawing in a small crowd of racers, media, supporters and NYC locals. A dinner was served, drinks were poured and I got to see some familiar faces. Cinelli unveiled the 2012 Red Hook Crit Vigorelli, Giro displayed their prizes and other brands showed off their contributions. It was a great night.

In the waining hours of daylight today, I met up with long-time friend Dan Chabanov. In the past few years, I’ve watched and admired Dan’s progress as he’s grown to what I’ll call a professional cyclist (read: PRO). While he competes actively in the road circuits, Dan’s most known for being an ATMO racer. His past season for Richard Sachs earned him much-deserved respect in the cross circuits and I felt like, the whole time, I was living through reading his race reports on Bonedeth.
A few months back, Adam of Stanridge Speed offered to send Dan a Highstreet Low Pro to race at the 2012 Red Hook Crit. Knowing that Dan is of “racer pedigree”, Adam knew if he got his bike under his, well, uhh, taint?, he’d receive some great PR&D, as well as exposure. Let’s face it, the Red Hook Crit is the premiere track bike crit and Dan is indeed #fixiefamous. I shot this bike in very little light and complete darkness, all handheld, at apertures I’ve learned to avoid, so please excuse the shallow depth of field.

Hey guys, I don’t know if you’ve heard but the 2012 Red Hook Crit is coming! Like, this weekend (3/24/12) and this year, the prizes are better than ever. Ride Brooklyn built up the prize Vigorelli and Dave just posted photos of all the goodies. But remember, the best prize is beating Crihs and money can’t buy that!

It’s that crunch week before the 2012 Red Hook Crit and the PR team has been going wild writing all these profile blurbs for the top competitors this year. Sadly, Crihs didn’t make the cut, so I added him in there for good measure. Even though he lost Monster Track to an out of towner, I think he can beat Chas at this race. But someone please beat the high-vis Italian and all the PRO roadies who show up to a track bike crit!

After making one of the sickest race helmets last year, Giro has once again made a limited run of prize helmets for the 2012 Red Hook Crit. Since I won last year’s race by like 20 minutes, Dave sent me one and I’ve been wearing it nonstop for the past year. Who’s gonna win this year’s event? I’ll finally be able to attend the event this month for the first time in three years. Can’t wait!
