Santa Cruz to Big Basin Overnighter – Brian Barnhart

Santa Cruz to Big Basin Overnighter
Words and photos by Brian Barnhart

I agreed to this trip before I knew where we were going or what we were doing. I recently moved to Santa Cruz from the east coast and take any chance I get to explore the area with friends. I’m primarily a BMX rider / commuter who does the occasional tour, as is my friend Mike who invited me on the trip. Our friend Chris, on the other hand, rides trails every morning and gets a kick out climbing a long steep hill. Finding out on Friday night that we were about to climb 6000 plus feet was a bit painful sounding, but we were up for the adventure.

Bokanev Goes Snow Yonder on Mt Baker

Photos by Andy Bokanev

I can’t begin to fathom weather like this, as it’s still 90 degrees here in Austin, but then again, we don’t have giants like Mt. Baker in our backyard and we’re pretty damn far south. Photos like these, taken just this weekend, serve as reminders of how truly powerful mother nature is.

Andy and Kelly decided to try to make it as far up Highway 542 as they could, not realizing it’d be literally under feet of snow. Even that couldn’t keep them from the Mountains of Madness…

L’Eroica with a Pro and an Amateur

I’ve always wanted to do the L’Eroica in Italy!

“The first weekend in October, now for the fifth consecutive year, le coq sportif is partnering with L’Eroica, one of the greatest cycling tours held in the Italian countryside. The event will give the French brand the chance to share its passion for cycling with the international community, in the enchanting, picturesque landscape of Tuscany.”

When Jeremy Dunn called me and said Rapha was planning to hold a Gentlemen’s Race in Boulder, I was, plainly, stoked. I’ve always followed the coverage of the other races and hoped we’d have the chance to share our characters and terrain here in Boulder with everyone, too.

And… Here we go!

Chasing Peaks In The Cascade Range: Part 2

I woke up on day four in Bend, Oregon at 6am, in what is likely the shittiest motel the (otherwise quite nice) city has to offer. Next door I could hear the muffled sounds of what seemed like an escalating argument over who stole whose bag of weed. Rather than stick around for the thrilling conclusion to this one, I quickly packed up and headed straight to Smith Rock State Park just a few miles north.

Last fall when Adventure Cycling hinted at a new mountain bike route linking up hot springs in central Idaho, some close friends and I immediately began scheming. Here I was fresh from scouting Oregon Outback and knew I wanted something bigger and with more singletrack. Tougher but with more hot springs. Well we got it.

State Bicycle Co: Hell Ride

Living in a place where it’s usually over 100 degrees and 70% humidity, I’d rather be swimming than riding at high noon. Then again, the Hell Ride is something special…

Hog Trails and Dirt Roads in Kauai

Hog Trails and Dirt Roads in Kauai

Hawaii is a haven for cycling. From Mauna Kea on Hawaii to MTB trails on Kona, this archipelago has it all. One island you mustn’t overlook however is Kaua’i. I’ve already touched on a few points here on the Radavist. Including Kaua’i Cycle and a few random photos from a quick cross ride I did, so let me further expand on those.

Chris and Jonny from Kauai Cycle take to the woods when they can on their mountain bikes. In the drier months, hog trails open up to form a dense network of singletrack. Other service roads open up, as the plant life withers and thins out, but right now, in the middle of summer, everything is overgrown.

While visiting Lauren’s parents, I brought my cross bike and ventured into the woods with Chris and Jonny, not knowing what to expect. I was promised “Jurassic Park” landscapes, a swimming hole and lots of ripping down dirt, well, mud roads on the island. We did 45 miles and around 3,300′. More than enough to leave your legs and shred sled, sated.

If you ever find yourself heading out to this island, do not leave your bike at home!

Yonder Journal: Trail of Tears Permanent

Man, the latest from Yonder Journal is amazing. Earlier this year, the gang – sorry, I wasn’t able to make this one – headed to the Southern US to embark on an infamous journey: along the trail of tears.

While civilization has sept and crept in since settlement era, a majority of this landscape is still very much alive as it was in the early 1800’s. It was a dark time in our Nation’s history, yet it served as a fantastic stage for a Brovet.

See more at Yonder Journal as the gang traverses the mountains in North Carolina and Tennessee. Also check out more behind the scenes selects below!

The Warriors Fun Ride Intro

Back in the 90’s Squid threw a themed event called the Warriors race. Just like the movie, it was a team event and took people all over NYC. This year, he brought the event back, in the form of a fun ride and Takuya Sakamoto was there shooting video.

I can’t wait to see more from this!

The Road to Interbike with Acre: Sequoia Shred Sess

The Road to Interbike with Acre: Sequoia Shred Sess

The Sequoias. If you’ve ever been to the Redwoods, then you know how humbling of a sensation it is, walking, driving or riding through them. Now, imagine trees of that size, growing at 8,000′ elevation.

On our ride to Interbike with Acre and Mission Workshop, we found ourselves in proximity to Camp Nelson, smack in the midst of the Sequoia Nat’l Forest. Ty had ridden a few trails here before, so he pushed for us to spend the afternoon picking lines in the pine needles.

MTB mileage is nothing to note, but Bear Creek is a great climb!

It was insane. Insanely steep, insanely loose and insanely fun. I don’t think I’ve had that much fun on a MTB in a long, long, time. Until Kyle hurt himself…
