Chris’ Spectrum Track Bike

Reportage

Chris’ Spectrum Track Bike

Over the years, Tom Kellogg has produced some insane track bikes, most of which go for a steal on eBay, Craigslist and at swaps. These machines have tight clearances, little details, great paint and you’d be hard pressed to find any two of similar breed.

Chris bought this frame off the Boston Craigslist years back. He’s raced it at Red Hook Crit and while it spends a fair amount of time hanging on the wall, sometimes he takes it for a spin into work at Mellow Johnny’s, where he wrenches.

Details include: custom fillet stem, insane seat stay cluster with bi-lam lugs, clearances for a 19mm tire up front, that fork, the clincher Shamals (rear rim was a road Shamal, laced to track Shamal hub) and yeah, that paint!

The 2014 NAHBS Drive-Side Gallery

Reportage

The 2014 NAHBS Drive-Side Gallery

At a glance, this chop-job might actually appeal to some of you. Hey, it’s got everything you need. Low-riding porteur rack, shifting options, multiple paint finishes, massive tire clearances, rim options, disc brakes (hydro or cable) and a reasonable saddle to bar drop.

Doing this little exercise made me realize one thing: damn, there were a lot of disc brakes at NAHBS this year!

While I enjoy detail photos, the drive side of a bike lets you see so much, especially when it’s shot at a nice and level side profile. You can see clearances, BB drop, overlap, trail and reach.

The drive side photo is the most important portrait you can shoot of a bike, in my opinion anyway… This Gallery breaks it down. Flip through for easy comparison and if you missed any of these photosets, check out the 2014 NAHBS archive.

Oh God! Why Can’t My Boyfriend Skid!? Prints

When the Foot Down first made this graphic, every skater turned track bike rider couldn’t help but crack a huge grin. Fast forward from 2010 to modern times and a lot has changed. Do you still own a track bike? Can you skid? Does your girlfriend even care anymore? Whatever your answer is, swoop up one of these prints, because nostalgia dies hard. Like the Aerospoke fad…

Bombtrack for Adidas: Street Crew Bags and Track Bike

This is by no means the first time a sneaker and bicycle company have worked together on a project, although I do think this capsule collection looks cohesive and clean. Bombtrack was approached by Adidas to design and produce 50 track bikes to coincide with the forthcoming Adidas Street Crew bag line.

These bikes can only be seen in a selected 32 Adidas Flagship Stores throughout Europe and Asia.

The 2014 PiNP Calendar: March

This is the third layout of the 2014 PiNP Calendar, entitled “Golden Hour Cyclery”. The camera and location are noted on the bottom left of the document.

Over the years, content on this site has changed considerably, but one thing I’ll always support is getting rad on bikes for the fun of it. Christian from Golden Saddle Cyclery is one of the most enthusiastic people I know when it comes to riding. The dude just goes hard.

On my last night in LA two weeks ago, we shot this photo and it came out so dialed that I thought it’d be perfect for the PiNP Calendar! I know this is a day early, but there’s a good chance I won’t touch a computer tomorrow.

BÖIKZMÖIND: The Full Fixed Gear Bicycle Documentary

It’s been a while, but the full BÖIKZMÖIND is now online, for free!

“BÖIKZMÖIND is a 30 minute film about riding fixed gear bikes in beautiful city of Bristol, UK. The film shows the diverse cross section of riders and asks why ride bikes with no gears in a city full of hills. It also shines a light on the community and camaraderie that comes with the simple joy of riding bicycles. This is the full film, released in 2011, which was previously only available to watch as a purchased digital download, but now 3 years after it’s initial debut, we’ve decided to put the full film online for everyone to enjoy!

The film’s soundtrack was curated & provided by Redg Weeks of Bristol’s own Invada Records and features BEAK>, The Fauns, Quakers and more! invada.co.uk You can buy a DVD hard copy of the film though, which comes in a specially designed screenprint-wrapped package with 97-page photobook, documenting the creation of the film. I’m still going through all the madness from Los Angeles. This one in particular came as a last minute surprise. Luka’s Cannondale track. Pristine condition. He even has the original wheels at home. As always, more on this to come!

Icarus Fade Chevron Singlespeed Frame

Reportage

Icarus Fade Chevron Singlespeed Frame

It’s kind of nice living two miles from Icarus Frames‘ shop in South Austin. When Ian gets in a frame from paint, I can just cruise on over and shoot a few photos. When he gets a frame in like this singlespeed road however, I spend a little more time documenting it.

This is a custom bicycle. It’s a NAHBS-worthy bike, although Ian has never shown at NAHBS. The detailing is above and beyond your average frame. Everything is shaped, carved and sculpted to perfection. Stainless rear, stainless lugs, internal routing, polished everything, immaculate shorelines, covered by a wild wet paint job, courtesy of Fresh Frame.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen something so dialed come out of Ian’s shop and to think, his queue has a quick turnaround. I just wish I could have photographed the complete bike!

Big Dirty Rage Race

When someone says the following words, in any order, I get chills: bike, China, race. Especially in Beijing! Big Dirty threw a rather intense race earlier this year: Tianjin to Beijing, 130km in 35C weather. Count. Me. Out!
