Grade School

Reportage

Grade School

Grade school. It’s a place where you go for life’s lessons. No matter how strong of a rider you think you are, a few hours in grade school each day will whip your ass in shape. Granted we don’t have mountains here, but we’ve got good climbing and this Recent Roll is dedicated to the people who have put in work the past few weeks on the hills. It’s from a few different films, hence the change in grain and color.

The 2012 Red Hook Crit Afterparty

Reportage

The 2012 Red Hook Crit Afterparty

I feel like this party ruined me more than any other night in Brooklyn. The 2012 Red Hook Crit was a huge success and after the race, everyone headed over to The Bell House for the official after party. Let’s see, a bunch of hungry, dehydrated racers, good bourbon selection and a bunch of beer. It was a recipe for liver disaster. I even caught a few of the Mash dudes a little loose. Alex, you still owe me a drink!

HELLHOMMUS

Reportage

HELLHOMMUS

This black-metal son of Odin is half of the Great Escape, the tale of a Göteborg couple who are on a journey to cross the great American west in search of the most crushing music. HELLHOMMUS is from Göteborg but he’s not into that shitty technical death metal. He likes the real shit. That black shit. Darker than your bottom bracket shell and harder than 7075 aluminum. I spent a cloudy, rainy afternoon with HELLHOMMUS at the dead pool in Asgard, where we read the poetry of skalds and planned his conquest of the US.

Merckx Mondays

Merckx Mondays

The Eddy Merckx Motorola livery might just be the most famous paint scheme in American cycling. I bumped into this bike while In Sydney a few weeks back. Gorgeous huh? But it’s not so peachy for Mr. Merckx these days. He’s facing charges in a Belgian police graft case… Yikes!

Check out more Merckx Mondays below!

Doug Dalrymple: Barrington St.

Photos by Doug Dalrymple

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying Doug’s Tumblr, the Job. His candid street portraiture keeps getting better and case in point are these two shots from Barrington St in Halifax, N.S. Usually, Doug rolls around every day with his kit of lenses and bodies, in his messenger bag or backpack, capturing NYC at its finest but these two are from his recent touring expedition up the east coast, into Canada. Follow the Job here!

The New Empire BMX Bowl

Reportage

The New Empire BMX Bowl

The old Empire BMX bowl was legendary. So many videos and photos took place behind their old spot off 5th street and since they moved up on north Lamar in Austin, their bowl was in shambles. Various radii of ramp laid out in the rain, mixed in with remnants from Texas Toast and other jams, until Ryan Corrigan submitted drawings for a bigger, better ramp. Months later and this sprawling bowl is complete but it took a lot of work. A few weeks ago, I headed out to shoot some photos with my 15mm fisheye on my AE-1. Trust me, these photos don’t do this ramp justice.

Full Frame Collective: Personal Series – Crihs Thormann

Photos by Dylan Bigby

I know I’ve been cropping portrait-orientation photos here on the site but these two photos are too good to put on another page. Crihs was in SF this winter, escaping the NYC cold and having a blast riding the hills of the city. Full Frame Collective did a great Personal Series on him while he was there and it’s definitely worth your time to check it out. They also touch on why Crihs spells his name like that… Head to FFC for the scoop!

Australia

Australia

Australia’s a wonderful place, filled with amazing people. This Recent Roll is compiled from various left-overs accumulated while I was Down Under. It’s mostly city shots and photos of vintage cars. Click the photo above to launch the Gallery, or click here to open in a new tab.

Jake Ricker: Felix’s Viana Track Bike

I was talking to a few people at NAHBS this year about how Seattle doesn’t have many builders, especially when compared to Portland, its arch enemy. There’s what? Davidson and that’s about it? Then I saw this beast. Todd Hunt Bertram builds custom bicycles under the name Viana Cycles. His shop is based in Seattle and this particular frame utilizes a rather unique wishbone seat stay bridge. What else would you call it? Take note of that downtube diameter, the sleeved and cleaved seat tube and the bright-ass color. The list just goes on. Check out more at Jake’s Flickr!

For more information on Viana, head to their site and their Etsy profile. That’s a first!

Crihs’ Lens – 2012 NAHBS Mash Team TT

Reportage

Crihs’ Lens – 2012 NAHBS Mash Team TT

Since PiNP is a one-man show, it’s tough to make it out to every single event. Over the years, I’ve gotten to know a lot of inspiring and talented individuals through the bike scene. Many of which are photographers who’ve inspired me to continue pressing forward with the site. So when I relaunched PiNP with new galleries and photosets, I wanted to reach out to my peers and ask them to contribute content. While I’m not ready to start handing over guest accounts, one of the ways I’m implementing this material is through Recent Roll posts: looking through their lenses.

The first Lens post is from Crihs and his experience at the 2012 NAHBS Mash Team TT race. Below are a series of photographs compiled while he raced. All photos by Chris Thormann.

Long Beach in ATX

Reportage

Long Beach in ATX

I gotta be honest, I don’t remember taking a lot of these photos for one reason or another. The main being I was fairly drunk most the time the Long Beach guys were in town. Then I opened up these two Recent Rolls: one color and one B&W. Some are from Austin and some are from San Marcos. I don’t even remember which cameras I shot these with but it was a sobering experience to see the shots of Pissy’s post-wreck condition. But let’s not focus on that too much because let’s face it, their trip was epic.

Nice and Smooth in LA

Reportage

Nice and Smooth in LA

With Rapha and Tracko both posting about proper grooming for male cyclists, I figured I’d add in some photos from a Recent Roll in LA. I stayed with Kyle for a week or so and kicked around the #GSC on the daily. Tracko and I got a nice trim by Omar the Barber one morning and I got some photos of him getting his head shaved. He’s an elusive one, often hiding from the camera, with his tongue sticking out, but it’s hard to be sour when your head’s full of foam. Check out more by clicking the above image.

Damian Riehl: Please Take Me There

Even though he was in a #campvibes van during this 32 hour road trip, Damian got some incredible shots of long, winding roads, perfect for a bicycle. Armed with his Hasselblad, loaded with Portra 400NC and a nice focal length (40mm), he documented this beautiful bend in the afternoon sun. Check the rest out at Damian’s Tumblr.

Brenton Salo: Reflecting

We’ve been having a ton of rain here in Austin for the past week, which has me focusing a lot on the various puddles. It’s not often that we get rain like this. Riding a bike can be a drag when it’s pouring but oftentimes, when you embrace it, you can have fun. Which brings me to one of my favorite photos by Brenton Salo. I don’t think I’ve seen a better skid photo than this one in years and it’s from 2009.
