Florian’s Troica Disc All Road

When in Berlin, photograph German frame builders, right? Troica Cycles is a Berlin-based builder, specializing in tig-welded, steel cyclocross and road bikes. While their website’s offerings look beautiful, Florian‘s bike is a little different. This all-road, light tourer, randonneur, or what have you, features a beautiful segmented fork with a custom rack to boot. Its paint job is accented by the sour apple Chris King, ENVE M50 wheels and a bright turquoise Chris King headset. This bike is colorful, yet subdued at the same time…

Today I got to spend four hours with Florian and his Troica, admiring its subtle style and capabilities. Check out more for yourself in the Gallery!

Mattia’s Legor Cicli Porreca All Road

Mattia’s Legor Cicli Porreca All Road

More and more people are tuning into the advantages of a road bike with bigger clearances. With brands like ENVE, designing forks like the GRD, specifically after frame builders requested it over and over again, it’s now easier than ever to tailor a custom bicycle to your own style of dirt riding.

Over the past few days, I’ve been riding in Barcelona with Mattia of Legor Cicli. He’s been thrashing this Porreca All Road model with ease as he shows us around his city. It’s a looker for sure but it’s got details to match its aesthetics. After all, looks ain’t everything.

For starters, Mattia designed a custom Columbus tubeset for this bike and utilized those stylish Syntace dropouts to run his SRAM Red Hydro setup. This bike also features a t47bb (which I failed to get a good photo of!) by White Industries and that new n nifty GRD fork by ENVE. The production frames will fit a 43mm tire, offering plenty of cushioning for rough roads and trails.

I’ve had a lot of fun riding with this bike and a lotta fun photographing it! Thanks for being a great host, Mattia!

Jet Lagged in Barcelona with ENVE

Yes! Europe and not just Europe, Barcelona, an incredibly photogenic backdrop to explore by bike. This week I’m visiting the shop of Legor Cicli with ENVE and Crema Cycles. We’ll be doing local rides on dirt and sealed roads, testing out the new Crema Cycles Duo all-road bike. The overlying theme of this trip is framebuilders, bikes and dirt. Lots of dirt!

Yesterday began at the airport, first thing in the morning and ended on the bike. Not a bad way to intro a trip like this and attempt to rid myself of hellish jetlag. Stay tuned for more, but for now check out the Gallery!

2016 NAHBS: Bastion Cycles 3D Printed Ti and Carbon Road

The technology is there and a few builders are utilizing it for sure, but you don’t often see a 3D printed frame with elegance like Bastion Cycles‘ titanium and carbon road bike. This thing is a beauty and for me, was a pleasure to photograph. I love the contrast of materials, the 3d-printed NAHBS insignia on the driveside dropout and the mean fuckin’ stance of this road bike. See for yourself in the gallery!

2016 NAHBS: Map Bicycles Rambonneur

Mitch from Map Biycles in Chico, California has always been one of my favorite builders. The dude just oozes a cool, confidence that always shows in his work. From customer builds to his own, Map never ceases to impress. Even when his bikes have digi camo on them. The Rambonneur has popped up on this site before, but it was nice seeing it in person for the first time…

2016 NAHBS: Nickel Plated Demon Frameworks

In my opinion, Demon Frameworks is doing something few other builders achieve: a unique, almost signature lug pattern. You can spot his bikes a mile away thanks to those meticulously carved, almost buttress-inspired designs. This year at NAHBS, this nickel-plated road accompanied him and people couldn’t get enough of it!

Moots’ Mountaineer 27.5+ Bikepacking Rig is Ready to Help You Get Lost

Over the past few years, bikes designed specifically for backcountry expeditions, or bikepacking trips have flooded the market. Framebuilders have always had an edge on the bigger brands, in terms of design, or nuanced usage and Moots is no exception. Plenty of people have used their YBB and full-fatbike platforms to take on bikepacking trips and races, prompting them to design a bike specifically for these kinds of trips, resulting in the Mountaineer 27.5+” YBB. We took a look at this bike back at Interbike last year and finally, Moots has added it to their online catalog.

The Spitfire paint job has been tackled by so many framebuilders over the years and yet, it’s still one design that I can’t get enough of. Like this RT-1D road from Mosaic Cycles. There are enough details in the paint to make anyone envious. Or ENVEous? See more at the Mosaic Flickr!

Hunter Cycles: New Caps and Shred Packs

You don’t have to buy a frame to support framebuilders. Rick from Hunter Cycles does a great job at making products that fit his particular style, both on and off the bike. He knows a simple, made in the USA cap goes a long way and those Porcelain Rocket-made “Shred Packs” are great for short dirt rides. His latest batch of the Shred Packs come in an array of colors and camo patterns. Both the caps and the packs are in stock now at Hunter Cycles.

With people and places come Beautiful Bicycles and a lot of work!

Without rambling on too much, here’s a list of the Top 10 of 2015 ranked by traffic and social media chatter, from highest down…

Boneshaker Magazine

I can get behind this!

“It’s the wind in your hair; two brave wheels and the horizon. Boneshaker is a perfect-bound publication with a strong design aesthetic and contributors from all over the world. We’ve celebrated the chrome-shining custom rides of the Sudan, investigated rebel bicycle gangs in LA, hit the dirt roads of New Mexico. Bespoke framebuilders, bike polo champions and bold activists have told us their tales. We’re for road cyclists, downhillers, fixie freaks, couriers, commuters, tourers, BMX bandits and everyone in between.

No training tips, race diets or adverts. It’s not how much your bike weighs that matters, but where it takes you. It’s not how fast you got there, but what you saw along the way.”

Argonaut Cycles and Chris King Precision Components Unveil the T47 Bottom Bracket Standard

Do we really need another bottom bracket standard? Maybe. It depends on what your experience has been with pressfit 30. Personally, my Argonaut has been fairly maintenance free but any steel frame I’ve ridden with one has been a hassle. Noisy, creaky and kind of a pain to maintain.

Ben from Argonaut Cycles and I had a conversation a year ago about how much BB86 and PF30 makes sense in terms of frame design and performance, yet as the crux for a bike’s drivetrain, it’s riddled with failure. In short: a larger bb cluster allows you to shape a bike’s tubes and not have to worry about the cluster where they all intersect. That’s why it’s kinda hard to use a threaded, English BB in a frame with OS diameters.

Enter the T47 BB standard. It uses a standard PF30 shell, that’s just threaded with 47x1mm pitch to take these new nifty Chris King BBs – either 30mm or 24mm axle compatible. You thread them in like an English BB and walk away. The frame builder can work with OS tubing diameters and achieve the same “stiffness” without dealing with the hassle of a PF30/BB30 bearing.

I’ll step aside with the tech jargon and leave Argonaut Cycles and Chris King to explain the rest below.

Inside / Out at Strawfoot Handmade

Reportage

Inside / Out at Strawfoot Handmade

I’m lucky to know so many makers. People who take a raw material and manipulate it to fit a specific use and aesthetic. Like frame builders, bag makers are able to look at a table full of parts and visualize the whole.

Garrett and Vince are Strawfoot Handmade. They’re two guys working out of a garage in Santa Cruz making everything from Dopp bags to totes for everyday use and kit bags, riding wallets or saddle bags for cycling. It seems like an obvious or easy job for someone who can sew but there’s a lot to the production process and that’s not even counting the development of new goods.
