Ride Along: Brean Shea – Chris Lee

Ride Along: Brean Shea – Chris Lee

What I’ve realized over time is that I end up with a lot of bike portraits of riders in my film rolls. This sparked an idea: a “ride along” interview series. We’ll start this off with Chris Lee, in NYC, where he interviews Brean Shea, a bike messenger and track cyclist.

Brian Vernor: A Rock Lobster Track for Aaron Bradford

Photos by Brian Vernor

The one, of many reasons why I love Rock Lobster Cycles is Paul’s ability to make even a utilitarian, race machine sexy. All in house. Now, I call this utilitarian but in reality, it’s more of a rarity. The tubeset used in this bike was developed by Easton over ten years ago and never went into production. A special tubeset for a special racer: Aaron Bradford. Leave it to Vernor to capture this bike in a way that even makes me look at the way I photograph bicycles! See the rest here.

Merckx Mondays

When I saw this on Crihs’ Instagram from the Bicycle Film Festival‘s Joy Ride art show in Mexico City, I had to get a higher res photo for Merckx Mondays. Luckily, Doug D was there and shot a proper photo. I’m so stoked on this piece and if I had the wall space, I’d try to purchase it from the artist! Here’s the scoop:

Name: 148+fracc
Website: www.facebok.com/yopower
Materials: wood and acrylic paint
Technique: xylography
Work description:

“This piece is based on Eddy Merckx’s hour record done in Mexico’s Agustin Melgar velodrome in 1972. The name of the piece comes exactly from that: 148 laps and fraction that he did to complete the record. The rasterized image is carved on wood pieces with the regalement size for velodromes. Also the colour lines are official except that the cuerda line is red instead of black just as it was back then.

Generally in my work I use a contrast between antique techniques and new concepts. That’s what gives all my work a discursive character. In this case this piece was specially made for the Joy Ride art show of the Bicycle Film Festival Mexico.”

So rad! Speaking of art pieces, Tracko came across this eBay auction!

Zak Kovalcik from Bike Messenger to Six Day Racer

I’m so pumped on this!

“Zak’s racing career began as a courier in Pittsburgh, competing in local courier races, twice winning the North American Cycle Courier “Track King” title. He segued into racing on the velodrome and worked his way through the ranks quickly.

2011 saw Zak winning the Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge points race, the biggest race of the year at his home track, defeating arch rival Jame Carney. At the Fixed Gear Classic in Blaine, MN, Zak and long time madison partner Dan Harm won the madison, competing against long time Six Day pro Franco Marvulli.

Zak still works occasionally as a courier, but his main focus is on moving up to the next level in his racing career. His dream until a year ago? Racing pro six days in Europe. Then in 2013 the all-but-forgotten art of steher racing had a little yankee flavour added during the 102nd Berlin Six Day when reining US omnium champion Zak Kovalcik competed in the high-speed niche event.

And we’ve been lucky enough to follow him during this amazing week in Berlin. ”

Mash: D’Horta Velodrome

Just about everyone is over in Barcelona for the Red Hook Crit, including the Mash team. Mike shot some incredible photos at the D’Horta Velodrome during a warm up session and you should really check them out.

That said, I’m more stoked on his detail photos of the track, which you can see here. I wish the best of luck to everyone who’s racing tomorrow. Ride safe fellas!
