Deux North: The Hunt 2

The newest video from Deux North‘s Hunt series is pretty rad. It’s not just a bunch of dudes climbing a mountain, there’s a dialog here, a tie in with the local’s favorite past time: the demolition derby. Check it out!

Rosko Cycles

Reportage

Rosko Cycles

Seth Rosko is much more than a frame builder to me. He’s a good friend and someone that I just enjoy being around. Seeing him build bikes is just an added bonus. Everyone claims to be a New Yorker, but Seth is one of those guys who was around when it all began. A huge advocate in the local skate scene and ex-Brooklyn Machine Works builder, he’s seen the cycling scene in NYC change over the years.

For the past few months, he’s been pushing grassroots racing in NYC. Building road and cross racing frames for fledgling teams and local racers. Most notably, the King Kog cross bikes, a bike for Matthew of Cicli Devotion and a few other road bikes for some local female racers.

During my short stay in NYC, I swung by Rosko Cycles to see how Seth makes use of his small, cramped work space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Jamie Swan Light Tourer

Reportage

Jamie Swan Light Tourer

During our ride to Philly from Brooklyn, I had the pleasure of staring down this beauty. My friend Harry Swartzman is close friends with Jamie Swan, a frame builder residing on Long Island, NY. Jamie’s work is very precise, clean, classy and yet, Harry’s bike falls into his atypical character.

Harry wanted a light tourer, with modern lines. A long, slammed stem, with a sloping top tube and fits much more like a road bike than a tourer. Just look at the drive-side elevation. It’s mean! Jamie often prefers more traditional road, randonneur and tourers but I think this frame is exquisite.

I’m in Philly for the Bike Expo

This year, my friend Harry from NYC emailed me, asking if I’d be interested in riding from Brooklyn to Philly for the Bike Expo, like we did two years ago. I needed no persuading. I booked my ticket and before I knew it, I found myself in Brooklyn for a few days.

Today we rode to Philly and the route is amazing this time of year. I haven’t seen Autumn in years and man, it was in full vibrancy. Here’s a few Instagram shots, with 35mm on the way.

Our route looks complicated, but is actually pretty simple. Try it out yourself.

NYC DOT: LOOK! For Cyclists Campaign

The NYC DOT has a new campaign out this month with the intent of increasing dooring awareness. I still think they should adopt the European method of opening the door with your opposing hand, so you’re forced to look in the direction of oncoming traffic but it’s a start. Still, staying three or four feet from a parked car helps considerably.

Affinity Premium Rush Bikes

While a lot of companies are trying to cash in on Premium Rush with horrid “fixies”, Affinity was the company that supplied the movie with the bikes.   To commemorate this weekend’s premiere, Affinity has a limited supply of Premium Rush Affinity Metropolitan completes. Here’s the press-release:

“With the upcoming release of the movie Premium Rush, The Affinity Bicycle Co. has played a key role and supplied its Metropolitan and Kissena frame sets for the main character Wilee played by Joseph Gordon Levitt and Kym Perfetto, a NYC bike messenger and fitness guru who has a cameo and also worked as a stunt double for co star Dania Ramirez.

The Affinity Metropolitan ridden by Wilee is a street and track specific bike made from 4130 steel and created to handle to rigors of street riding but with the aggressive race geometry of a track bike. Unlike its predecessor the Lo Pro, Affinity’s first and more notable pursuit style track frame, the Metropolitan is a more understated work horse, with its stream lined look and straight blade fork. It comes street ready with front and rear brake options, making it legal on the road or pull the brakes off for use on the velodrome.

Catch the Metropolitan limited edition frame set in pure white, with the classic Affinity bladed crown lugged fork. Also available in limited quantities, Affinity will be supplying an original sticker pack. Make your bike rad by customizing the frame so its just like the movie bike.”

Check out more photos below and be sure to check the Affinity Blog for info on the group ride to the premiere.

Messengers

If you’ve been a regular at any NYC alleycat in the past decade, chances are you’ve seen Daniel Leeb there with an entire crew documenting it. He’s been compiling video for the past ten years and has reached the point where he’s ready to do something with it. From the looks of the trailer, Messengers is a documentary about alleycats in NYC, following two key figures: Felipe and Alfred.

Cinecycle has a Kickstarter, so head over to help out.

Dan Chabanov Got Himself a Camera

I’ve known Dan for many years and before he was a road or cross racer, he was a bike messenger and a photography student. This “shoot as you go” mentality has done him well and with a recent purchase, he’s been keeping his blog up to date with candid photography like this. You should really follow him on Tumblr and make sure you Ask him all the tough questions like “how can I win the Red Hook Crit next year?”.

Embrocation Volume 8 is Out

It’s not every day that a magazine contacts me to submit content for a forthcoming issue. So when they do, I’m usually pretty pumped. Case in point: the new Embrocation. Volume 8 is filled with a bunch of photos from my last trip to NYC, coinciding with a story written by Neil Bezdek. But it doesn’t stop there, this new issue is packed with juicy content. Make sure you pick one up at your local stockist or order one here at Embrocation.
