Ride in Peace, Ewen Gellie, Australian Framebuilder

Ewen Gellie, an icon of the Australian framebuilding community and early MTB scene has passed, far too soon at just 53; a suspected heart failure.

Ewen was instrumental in celebrating the custom frame building scene in Australia, he engaged with Andy White of FYXO to hold the first Australian Custom Bike Show in 2012, and both the show and framebuilding community have strengthened since. Always one to share his wealth of wisdom, from engineering, ecology, riding technical features – to tricks for setting up brake calipers, and everything in between.

The Gellie legacy lives on through his steel creations.

Tailwinds and wheelies, Ewen!

A Flat Bar Update to Kevin’s Ezra Caldwell Homage Horse Cycles All Road

Remember that Horse Cycles Shop Visit that Ian and Kevin from ENVE worked on for the Radavist last year? It featured Kevin’s Horse Cycles all-road that was an homage to the late Ezra Caldwell – may he ride in peace! Well, Kevin was just in Bozeman for the Swift Campout – which unfortunately got snowed out – so he made the best of the 7-hour drive up from Salt Lake City and spent the extended weekend riding MTB trails on his newly converted Horse Cycles.

Ride in Peace, Bruce Gordon

Friends of this site and Bruce Gordon just informed us that he has passed away. With more details to come, I’d like to take a second to commemorate Bruce’s contributions to the very sport we all love and hold dear to our hearts. Bruce was a true legend and in a lot of ways, he helped pave the way – no pun intended – for our off-road cycling obsessions. Ride in peace, Bruce.

A Farewell Pegoretti Love 3 Aluminum Road Bike

A Farewell Pegoretti Love 3 Aluminum Road Bike

We’ve lost a lot of celebrities in the past few years but none shook me as much as the passing of Dario Pegoretti. The man was a legend. A true auteur. A builder that didn’t just weld bikes together, he created moving art. After the news settled of his death, I felt like I hadn’t paid my respects. That is until this bike rolled past me at Chris King the other day.

This weekend is the Chris King Open House, and to commemorate Pegoretti, Above Category shipped CKPC out this Love 3 aluminum road bike. Handmade and hand painted by the man himself. Aluminum you say? Yes! Dario made a small run of these bikes from Columbus’ XLR8 tubesets. He machined his own dropouts with replaceable hangers, used 30mm OS chainstays, a 31.6 seatpost for extra stiffness, and a threaded BB for worry-free rides. After his final fun of Love 3 frames, he continued his practice in steel.

Above Category built this bike up, as part of their permanent collection, so I had to show my respects to Pegoretti and give it some extra special love on the shop floor at Chris King, where the bottom bracket, headset, and hubs were machined.

Ride in Peace, Dario.
