The 2014 PiNP Calendar: March

This is the third layout of the 2014 PiNP Calendar, entitled “Golden Hour Cyclery”. The camera and location are noted on the bottom left of the document.

Over the years, content on this site has changed considerably, but one thing I’ll always support is getting rad on bikes for the fun of it. Christian from Golden Saddle Cyclery is one of the most enthusiastic people I know when it comes to riding. The dude just goes hard.

On my last night in LA two weeks ago, we shot this photo and it came out so dialed that I thought it’d be perfect for the PiNP Calendar! I know this is a day early, but there’s a good chance I won’t touch a computer tomorrow.

I don’t know about you, but I’m getting antsy to go on another ride like this. California has many hidden roads and we barely scratched the surface in the Diablo Range. Out of all the photos from that photoset, this is the one most people requested in high-res.

As a new year unfolds, we’ll begin with one of the most requested images of 2013. When I posted this photo of Kyle on his Stinner, people immediately emailed, requesting this be the January photo for the new PiNP Calendar. Even though it’s a few days late (sorry!), here ya go!

This is the twelfth layout of the 2013 PiNP Calendar, entitled “The Constant Climb”. The camera and location are noted on the bottom left of the document.

We’ve all read the metaphors eluding to the inherent connection of the bicycle and life’s struggles. You’ll find none of that here. This is the last month of the 2013 PiNP Calendar and I think this photo best represents the goal of the site, without even stating anything. Next year, I’ll be making a rather large change and I hope you’ll stick around for the ride!

This is the eleventh layout of the 2013 PiNP Calendar, entitled “Team Raleigh Track”. The camera and location are noted on the bottom left of the document.

The Team Raleigh track bikes might be one of the most iconic liveries in cycling. The classic yellow, red and black paint, mixed with a straight forward, no nonsense British craftsmanship lands these bikes in the grail category for collectors and enthusiasts alike. This bike in particular is built with Campagnolo pista, Cinelli and was raced in Victoria. Don’t worry, more photos of this beaut are coming!

This is the tenth layout of the 2013 PiNP Calendar, entitled “Sunset on Mt Lowe”. The camera, lens used and location are noted on the bottom left of the document.

What better way to end the day in Los Angeles than an HC climb up a frontage road to watch the sun set over the mountains? Mt. Lowe is no joke, especially on a cross bike, as we all found out. While we missed the sunset at the top of Mt. Wilson, we were able to soak in its last remaining rays as our legs burned…

This is the ninth layout of the 2013 PiNP Calendar, entitled “Klöntalersee”. The camera, lens used and location are noted on the bottom left of the document. This one’s for everyone who has emailed me requesting a high-res version of this photo…

After climbing 2,000′ in just two miles on a 26″ MTB, seeing the Klöntalersee was a sight for sweaty eyes. This beach-lined lake glows green and appears to be plucked from the Carribean. All it takes is a neck-straining look to the sky to quickly realize that you’re in the Swiss Alps. After coming across this popular “swimming hole” all I could think was how cold the water would be. Oh and it’s a widely-used source for hydroelecticity within Glarus!

The atavistic urge to play is inherent in all animals. From the porpoise, to the antelope and even your standard issue dirt rider, shredding is part of their daily routine. Sometimes, we just need a friendly reminder…

This is the seventh layout of the 2013 PiNP Calendar, entitled “#SeekTheDevil”. The camera, lens used and location are noted on the bottom left of the document.

Fabled to be the point of creative by local Native American tribes, Mt. Diablo offers the San Francisco Bay Area-riders some much needed elevation to get their blood boiling, literally. This  3,864 feet (1,178 m) mountain is visible from SF, as well as most of northern California and while it’s nothing when compared to the southern California mountain tops, Diablo can deliver some scorching temperatures in the spring and summer months. Try it out on for size next time you’re in SF. #SeekTheDevil.

This is the sixth layout of the 2013 PiNP Calendar, entitled “Into the Void”. The camera, lens used and location are noted on the bottom left of the document.

During my tour in China with Factory 5 and Mission Workshop, we often found ourselves riding into the unknown. When visibility is low and you can’t see more than half a mile ahead of you, who knows what lies ahead. Part of that mystique is what made that trip so unique and photos like this barely scratch the surface of what it was like to ride through the countryside.

There were many moments during my recent ride in Australia where I came to a skidding stop, hand already in my backpack, pulling out my camera but this is by far one of the my favorites. If you’ve ever wanted to go somewhere that looks like nowhere else, this is it. You know, just doing my share for Tourism Victoria…

On the first of each month, I’ll be posting a PDF file here on the site, allowing you to print this letter-sized document as you wish. Print as many copies as you’d like. Hand them out to friends or your local shop. It’s intended to be a free offering from the site, as a thank you to all the readers out there.

Spring is just around the corner and that means it’s time for rides that will kick your ass. The place where I go in the US for ass-kicking is Los Angeles. This stretch of the 2 is closed and for good reason. Falling rocks cover the road but man, is it other-worldly.

Enjoy!

I don’t know about you, but January flew by for me. While most of you are still having to ride in inclement weather, I thought I’d share some Texas sun, if only as a reminder that Spring is almost here.

On the first of each month, I’ll be posting a PDF file here on the site, allowing you to print this letter-sized document as you wish. The first month features my Argonaut road bike, along with EXIF information and location of the photo.

Enjoy!
