A Ride Up the 2 Revealed that Newcomb’s Is Closed on Tuesdays

The last time I was in Los Angeles, I had one thing on my mind: doing some road riding in the Angeles National Forest. Usually, I’m in LA on my cross bike and we will spend our afternoons poaching trails, escaping to the dirt or bombing fire roads. All of which are wayyy more fun than a road ride, ATMO, anyway.

Still, there’s nothing like a somber ride up the 2 to Newcomb’s Ranch for a burger, a beer and some fries, only to rip back down to town, sated.

Unfortunately for the group that morning, Newcomb’s was closed and I think I was the only one who really ate anything at all that morning. Check out some selects from a Recent Roll. Man, that was a long time coming!

We totaled 80 miles and around 8,000′ and damn, Oinksters was good!

The Lost Lukens Ride

My buddy Hans Groszkruger had sent over this ride and I posted back in March. Somehow, it appears to have dropped off the face of this site. Maybe it was skipped in the migration? Who knows. All I do know is that Hans’ Rocklobster has taken him all over Los Angeles and his ride inspired Kyle and the Golden Saddle gang to venture out and tackle it themselves.

Head over to Tracko to see some photos and read on below for Hans’ ride reportage. With only three photos, I didn’t have enough for a gallery, but you’ll enjoy it anyway!

Recent Roll: LA All Day

I just got back my photos from a few rolls in Los Angeles. Unlike other times I’ve traveled there, I took it easy. It was also the first time I got to spend a lot of time with Tracko without some dumb bike event going on all week. Most of this is a blur to me, as the photos imply but a lot of it showcases the fun we had.

SoCalCross Recap: Cross on a Track Bike

Saturday in Los Angeles brought forth the SoCalCross race and the first ever southern california Tracklocross race. While I spend this afternoon going through all the photos, I figured I’d share this one with you. Yes, it’s way out of focus but I really love how it came out. That’s Hern whipping up a pile of sand on his way through the pit on the course. Watching Austin Horse crush the shit out of the field was entertaining. It was a great way to conclude the afternoon for me.

More to come shortly!

Geoff McFetridge for Golden Saddle Cyclery

If you haven’t heard by now, you should know that Kyle Kelley, aka Juvi-Kyle, aka Tracko has opened a shop in Silverlake, Los Angeles called the Golden Saddle Cyclery. After years of working in the industry, Kyle decided it was best to open his own shop. So he, Woody and Ty have been working overtime trying to get the shop open and one of the keys to owning a legit business is legit branding, which is why GSC got linked up with Geoff McFetridge.

Check out more at Tracko (dude gets two plugs back to back here, so he must be doing something right!).

Also, be sure you read what Kyle had to say about Low Bicycles and the Low Track!

A Day in 10 Photos 07.17.2010

Well it’s been a whirlwind of a week since I’ve gotten back from Los Angeles. LA Brakeless‘ Summer Fix event was one hell of a time. It was hands down the biggest fixed freestyle comp, trumping all others in many aspects and in others, adding a new perspective to the sport. These photos are way past due, so without anymore beating around the bush, here they are. It’s great to see Slaylor back on a bike and acting like his usual self!

Last Sunday, LAFixed organized the first NJS Ride in Los Angeles. Dudes and dudettes showed up, flashing their Keirin-bred race machines and rode around the streets of LA. The ride spanned from Little Tokyo (Downtown LA) to Pasadena and was a blast. Check out all the photos here!

Thanks for the heads up Paul!

AIDS Life Cycle: Team Lope Tyre Clubbe

AIDS Life Cycle is a 7-day, 545 mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles that raises money and awareness for the HIV and AIDS services of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. This year, two readers of this site will be doing the ride. They’ve named themselves Team Lope Tyre Clubbe. Blair is 36 and Thom is 37. Both have been riding track bikes for 7 years and had extensive experience on other bikes. Bottom line is, they’re dedicated cyclists.

I can’t think of a more honorable reason to do a ride then to raise money for a cause; which you can donate to here by the way. I’m beyond impressed at the dedication it would take to venture on such a ride. Thom and Blair have a long hard road ahead of them. Did I mention they’ll be doing it on track bikes as well? A Leader 725TR and a Cinelli MASH. I betcha those companies would wanna support something like that (cough, cough).

Check out more information on the AIDS Life Cycle here and don’t forget to read up on the Team Lope Tyre Clubbe!

Junkan: Tokyo to Osaka Edits for GOOD Magazine

The Tokyo to Osaka film project made two short edits especially for GOOD Magazine.

As GOOD describes the project:

In the summer of 2009, 13 cyclists from Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco took their fixies to the Land of the Rising Sun for an ambitious undertaking: A 350-mile tour from Tokyo to Osaka. Their goal (along with survival) was to experience a more intimate kind of travel and make a documentary of their adventure.

Their forthcoming film, Tokyo to Osaka, will chronicle their seven-day journey, including the mechanical problems and injuries that tripped them up and the unexpected roadside barbeques and new friendships that made a cycling trip such a rewarding way to travel.

In case you haven’t seen these two edits, check them out below.

5 Years Isn’t Enough

5 Years Isn’t Enough

Photo by Luis Sinco / Los Angeles Times

The LA Times reported this morning on the sentencing of that asshole doctor, Christopher Thompson, who slammed his brakes right in front of a pack of cyclists on a training ride. Above is a photograph of the dipshit crying as the judge sentences him to 5 years. That’s it?

What if he would have pulled a gun on someone and shot them. I wonder what his sentence would have been then. He did say at the scene of the accident that he wanted to “teach them a lesson.” That being said, at least Superior Court Judge Scott T. Millington recognizes it as severe enough of a crime to give him a long sentence, whereas that clown in NC got off with only 120 days for literally shooting a cyclist in the head.

Memorial Bike Ride To Raise Funds For Alzheimer’s Association

Held in memory of Podium’s founding father, Winston Dunlap, Podium Distribution’s first annual Winston Ride will be held on Sunday, November 15th in Los Angeles’ South Bay. The event will consist of a series of three rides—a six, a fourteen, and a thirty five mile option to fit all rider levels. All proceeds generated form the ride will go to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Winston Dunlap lost his battle with Alzheimer’s last year, which prompted his son Brian Dunlap to create an event designed to build awareness around the debilitating and still incurable disease.

“We spent a huge part of our childhood racing and riding BMX which my dad was a huge supporter of,” says Podium VP Brian Dunlap. “I felt like creating a fun event that everyone can participate in would be a great way to honor my father’s life and help raise some funds for Alzheimer’s research.”

The Winston Ride will take place at Sangria on Hermosa Beach Pier at 9am on Sunday, November 15th.

Wish List Vol. 2 – Travel Made Easy

Welcome to our second installment of Wish List, where Radavist contributors share their dreams of things that don’t exist, but maybe should. Some will be slightly niche but perfectly reasonable ideas that have every right to exist. Others will be impractical, expensive, and/or dangerous fantasies that probably should remain fantasies. Travis is back with another stack of requests, some of which go well beyond the bike industry.
