Merckx Mondays

All photos by Andy White

Having just let go of my beauty last year (my Stuttgart Pista, not a girl), I know how hard it is to say goodbye. Andy’s had to make that decision recently, forcing him to sell his beautiful MX-Leader track bike. Like my Stuttgart, his MXL represented his brand and his shop, FYXO Hub. But that doesn’t mean when you sell it, you can’t take it out for one last photo shoot. And like a good friend, he sent these my way!

While I didn’t get the chance to do a Shop Visit at Pushbike, I did manage to get some great Merckx Mondays content. Sarah has quite the collection of Eddy Merckx memorabilia at the shop, so if you haven’t been, you should really check it out. For now, see more below!

This Merckx Mondays is from all over the globe, beginning with Sydney where Khalil spotted this Motorola outside a popular bakery. At first, I thought this was his Fyxo-acquired MXL, but alas, it’s another rider’s beaut.

Molteni shirts? Sure! These aren’t quite available yet but when they are, I’ll letcha know. They’re gonna be good and that’s not the only Eddy Merckx-inspired shirt for this week’s Merckx Mondays. There’s one more shirt in today’s post, along with a crazy Merckx time trial bike, sent in by a reader.

The Eddy Merckx Motorola livery might just be the most famous paint scheme in American cycling. I bumped into this bike while In Sydney a few weeks back. Gorgeous huh? But it’s not so peachy for Mr. Merckx these days. He’s facing charges in a Belgian police graft case… Yikes!

Merckx Mondays

A few weeks back, I received this email out of the blue. Having sold all of my Eddy Merckx bikes, it made me a little sad. I wish I could keep every bike that I’ve owned but it’s not financially possible for me. Knowing that this frame went to a good home, I’m left with all the rides I did on it and the photos I took. Both of which are good enough for me. Putting in miles on an Eddy Merckx influenced how I wanted my Bishop to ride. I admire the Belgian geometry and even the chevrons and colors of the Eddy Merckx frames.

This bike and my Eddy Merckx pista in a lot of ways, made this blog into what it is today. They’re icons…

Danny Hale? Who’s that? I’ve never heard of a Motorola team member named Danny Hale. It sounds like an Australian name. Something’s fishy here. Yesterday, I met up with Dan (no relation to Mr. Hale) to shoot his Motorola Merckx. Like the 7-Elevens, the Motorola Eddy Merckx frames are classic examples of American cycling. Check out more of the same and more of the new below!

This week’s Merckx Mondays content is a little on the thin side but it’s still packed with some great bikes. To go with the livery of the first one, here’s a photo of Eddy in his Faema kit.

A lot happened in the Merckxiverse last week, starting with Tuesday’s announcement that Nicolas Sarkozy is promoting Eddy Merckx to Commandeur of the Legion of Honour. About time huh? That’s the highest possible Legion of Honour grade the French bestow upon individuals. That was first up on the radar and then Ten Speed Hero dropped a series of posts on their newest addition to the stable, starting with a study of the flat-crown Eddy Merckx fork.

Andrew from Copenhagen was kind enough to share with me his new favorite brew. Man, I wish they had this stuff in the states!

Today doesn’t feel like a Monday. Usually on Mondays, I don’t get the chance to ride because I’m so busy but today I was out on the bike for a few hours. When my drive-side BB cup came loose, I found myself doing some emergency work with my bike flipped upside down on the side of the road. After I got the cups somewhat tight (damn Italian threaded shells!), I admired the MXL / MAX bb lug. It’s massive. No wonder Merckx loved MX-L so much.

Thanks to Jordan from Velo Champ for sharing this photo. See more photos at Eroica Cicli and more Merckx Mondays below!

I feel like these Litespeed-built Eddy Merckx road bikes have been popping up all over the place as of late. While I was at the Mellow Swap on Saturday, I ran into Gideon and took a few photos of his road bike. I love it when people ride the piss out of their vintage frames and he’s been putting in miles on this thing all over the hills of Austin.

I swear, putting a modern group on a bike that previously had 8-speed Dura Ace STi on it is like getting a brand new machine. I loved the “period correctness” of the last build but man, riding 52/46 with an 11-24t cassette up 5,000+ feet of elevation sucks! So when I came across a deal on my Phil Wood road wheels, SRAM Force shifters and RED Black cranks, I pounced. I really, really, needed to upgrade. But didn’t Merckx once say, “don’t buy upgrades, ride upgrades”? Or something to that effect.
