A Different Kind of Maker: Jacob from Bread Shop Santa Fe and his Surly Cross Check

We visit a lot of makers here at the Radavist. From frames to components to bags. 2020 has put a lot of that on momentary pause, yet I’ve enjoyed meeting cyclists serendipitously since moving to Santa Fe, many of which are small business owners. One of those is Jacob from Bread Shop. He and his wife Mayme, along with his brother Zac run a small bakery that’s big on taste. We’ve been buying loaves once a week from Bread Shop and this week I met up with Jacob to shoot his Surly Cross-Check.

Due to the pandemic, I didn’t get to shoot Jacob, Mayme, and Zac actually baking bread in their shop. Part of the joy of shooting makers are capturing the details, the textures, and the character of the spaces. While I wasn’t able to document the bakers, I really enjoyed shooting Jacob poking out of this gorgeous corten façade… and his bike ain’t bad either!

Jacob doesn’t own a car, so when he moved back to his hometown from Portland, he wanted to get a new bike. He picked this Cross-Check up from Sincere Cycles, who also outfitted it with the Surly front rack, MSW rear rack, and plump Gravelking tires.

The Surly Moloko bars offer up multiple hand positions, perfect for battling headwinds when riding around town. Recently, Jacob bought the rear basket, which is perfect for hauling loaves home.

Bread Shop specializes in naturally leavened bread and is open Thursday through Sunday, 11am to 2pm, with orders opening Wednesday at 9am. You can order online and pick it up in person. I recommend the sourdough loaf with oats and the camp cookies, but it’s all super tasty. We pick up a loaf after getting breakfast at Iconik Coffee across the street on the weekends.
