On a Steel Horse I Ride: the Speedvagen OG1 Road Bike

The Vanilla Workshop has multiple tiers in terms of frameset design and production. At the highest tier is a Vanilla. These are 100% custom, lugged beauties made entirely by Sacha White. Their wait list is so long, it’s not even worth mentioning. Then on the more readily-available tier is a Speedvagen frameset. These used to be only available as a 100% custom geometry with multiple options from paint, ranging from a simple, single color with detail hits to complex, “Surprise Me” paint jobs that are so wild, they’ve inspired how other builders tackle paint design.

Now, Speedvagen has a third option in its pricing catalog: the OG1 road frameset. These are stock frames, already painted and in stock now, ready to ship to you in days or weeks, not months. The OG1 also carries a pricetag that won’t make you choke on your morning breakfast, when it comes to a made in the USA frame anyway.

The OG1 is still made 100% by hand in the Vanilla Workshop and it’s painted in house with a custom Speedvagen design, usually two per year with the first year’s designs being limited to a matte lavender or a burly-looking matte olive drab! It’s obvious which color you’re seeing here.

These frames are a deal, but there’s a catch…

ENVE Foundation Launch: Speedvagen’s OG Disc – Free Foundation 45 Wheel Upgrade

With the pandemic putting a halt to NAHBS and our post-NAHBS framebuilder ride/showcase in Sedona this year, we decided to pull something together with our friends at ENVE to commemorate their new Foundation 45/65 wheel launch. When ENVE moved into its new carbon manufacturing and testing facility, they worked hard to push the progression of carbon wheel design and manufacturing. Over three years later and thousands of hours developing, today they launched their Foundation Collection, a completely new wheel line that marks a new milestone in wheel design. In short, for those of us who aren’t interested in graphs or projections, ENVE launched a $1600 made in the USA wheelset and to help showcase these new wheels, we pinged three frame builders to showcase these wheels. The second in the series is Speedvagen with their OG Disc with a special introductory offer…

Speedvagen Announces New Surprise Me Program and Design

For five years, Speedvagen has designed elaborate Surprise Me paint schemes, offering them for a short window before closing their orders for good. Starting this year each Surprise Me year will be available until the day the following year’s scheme is released. That widens the ordering window for everyone who would like one of these elaborate paint designs on their Speedvagen.

For this year’s design, the crew at Speedvagen looked to old hot rods, rat rods, and garage-built, patina racers. The new design offers up a Detroit Agate-inspired multi-layered paint marring as well as crisp and sharp graphics. Other upgrades people can order include painted to match hubs, a stainless chainstay protector, and ee Cycleworks brakes. Check out all the details at Speedvagen.

Speedvagen’s Limited Edition Bourbon Disc OG

Speedvagen’s first Ready Made bicycle model was the OG1, a true to form classic road bike, made by hand in Portland, Oregon. These stock-sizing models offered the same details Speedvagen is known for in a stock configuration with a faster delivery time. Then came the OG Classic, a vintage-inspired all day road bike. Soon came the Disc OG and the Chris King OG.

For 2020, Speedvagen is tapping into Chris King’s Bourbon for a limited run – only 8 available – of Speedvagen Disc OG fully decked out with Chris King Bourbon. These bikes are available in three paint colors: Mustard, Oxblood, or Sage and in 4 stock sizes. They’re also being fitted with a t47 bottom bracket. A new design implementation they’ll be using from here forward. See more details on these bikes below.

Speedvagen Has Counted Your Votes: New GTFO and CKOG Ready Made Bikes

After the Workshop Build Off, Speedvagen counted all the votes on this website, social media, and other forms of chatter to determine the winner. Without a doubt, the GTFO landed the public’s love and a place in the Ready-Made program. But alas, if the GTFO isn’t your speed and you’d like to see a Ready-Made road bike, the team at Speedvagen worked with Chris King on special pricing for an entire King package, resulting in the CKOG road bike. Check out the details for both of these bikes below and see more at Speedvagen.

Speedvagen’s Operation Hawt OG 1 Road

The OG 1 road bikes are exceptional machines and while I’ve favored the more subdued colors in the part, one can’t deny how sick this bike looks!

“The “Operation Hawt” OG 1 will be available in two build packages: our stock OG1 complete build for $5245.95 -or- a killer deal on a full Enve package including painted to match Enve carbon stem, Enve carbon Hbars and Enve SES 3.4/DT Swiss240 wheelset and our brand new Speedvagen carbon/ti skewers all for $7295.95.”

Available for 3 weeks only, that includes the special build kit pricing. Pre Order ends Nov 6th. You can put a $500 deposit down at Speedvagen.

My OD OG1 Speedvagen Road with SRAM Rival

Reportage

My OD OG1 Speedvagen Road with SRAM Rival

Ever since first reviewing the All-City Mr. Pink and then the lavender Speedvagen OG1, I really wanted a steel road bike again. After some finagling, I managed to buy an OG1 frameset, along with a few painted-to-match parts from the Vanilla Workshop. Now, since the OG1 is a ready-made, off-the-shelf geometry, it’s not as pricey as the other Speedvagen frames. I also didn’t feel the need to go custom for this frameset, since the OG1’s stock geometry fit me pretty well. All I needed was a spacer under the stem to get the same reach and extension as my Argonaut road bike.

For me, a road bike is the simplest tool in my quiver. There are no rack mounts, no disc brakes, it’s just a straight-forward road machine.

A Guide to Photographing Bicycles

A lot of readers have asked for a guide to photographing their bikes. Be it for Readers’ Rides or for their Instagram. Here, John walks us through the process he uses, which we can all agree is ‘dialed.’

Over the past 15 years, I’ve documented hundreds of bikes both in situ and in my makeshift studio setup at events like the North American Handmade Bicycle Show, the ENVE Builder Roundup, and the Chris King Open House. While it might seem daunting at first, it really is easy and like everything photo-related, it’s all about the setup. Let’s look at my process in detail below…
