Readers’ Rides: Galen’s Ritchey Basket Breakaway from Singapore

We love a good basket bike over here at the Radavist and Galen‘s Ritchey Breakaway build really exemplifies that! Check out the full build details below, with words by Galen…

Here’s a recent build I put together around a (separable!) Ritchey Breakaway gravel bike.

Some notable features: the bike sports the MUSA quadrumvirate of Paul, Wood, King and White. It also features components from Germany, Japan, Taiwan, France, Italy, US, England, China and Canada—touching all the major bike manufacturing countries and a few of the minor ones. It’s a Where’s Waldo of components.

About the build: I built this for post-COVID travel. and daily grocery-getting. I’m a Canadian based in Singapore. I relocated here from Taiwan where I was working in the bike industry.

Starting off:
The frame is built with Tange Prestige steel and powdercoated with a machine-spec wrinkle grey finish.

The bike features a 1x SRAM Red drivetrain, a 40 tooth Wolftooth chainring, and a 3t Bailout 9 – 32 tooth 11 speed rear cassette controlled by a bar end SRAM shifter. Thanks to the 9 tooth on the Bailout cassette, I have ~the same gear range as a compact Ultegra drivetrain. The bottom bracket is BSA Phil Wood GXP outboard.

The wheelset is built with a 32 hole Son Dynamo laced to a wide carbon rim, and a 32 hole White Industries T11 XD driver hub in the rear. Tires are Rivendell Jack Brown green label (extralight).

The wheels are set up with Paul Components Racer centerpull brakes, and SwissStop Black Prince brake pads.

Up front you’ll find a matching powder-coated stem, 46cm Easton EC90 handlebars, TRP RSL Carbon Brake levers, and Brooks Cambium griptape. The bike is currently setup with a Nitto front rack and a Wald Basket. Under the front rack you’ll find an Edelux 2 dynamo light and a Chris King headset.

The bike is currently set up with a 3T carbon setback seatpost, and a Giles Berthoud Aspin touring saddle.

I think that sums it up!

The brakes are all configured with cable couplers, so the frame can be easily split in half for airline travel.

All bolts throughout are titanium, except in the stem, which are stainless.

It’s a bit of a Blue-Lug inspired piece!

We’d like to thank all of you who have submitted Readers Rides builds to be shared over here. The response has been incredible and we have so many to share over the next few months. Feel free to submit your bike, listing details, components, and other information. You can also include a portrait of yourself with your bike and your Instagram account! Please, shoot landscape-orientation photos, not portrait. Thanks!
