There’s something magical about this photo. Maybe it’s the cowtrack, or the light, or the bicycle, but someday, I can only hope that everyone gets to ride something like this. California is an amazing place… Thanks for capturing this moment, Austin!

    Where is this?!

Walnut Creek Open Space, Walnut Creek, Ca – great riding.

To be a nitpicky former geology nerd it’s technically a sheeptrack regardless of the animal that made the track. :-) Beautiful photo!

    • No kidding? I had no idea. That’s a great tidbit of knowledge. Thanks!

I can’t find any documentation to back up my previous statement. This is what I learned in college some 18 years ago. But apparently the is a term Sheep Track (and Cattle Track) is not the preferred terminology. The prevailing geomorphology literature seems to prefer the term Terracette (Encyclopedia of Geomorphology, pg 1044). I apologize for my previously incorrect tidbit. :) Now back to more important things – BIKES!

The value of the photo comes in the juxtaposition of the man made path verse the animal or nature made path. It might be more striking had the rider been captured in an area with no evidence of mans influence but I think the photobrapher realized the value in the contrast of the subject choosing the lesser “human” traveled path in plane sight of an easier route. Also isn’t it awesome to think about putting yourself in place of the animals that created that trail? “I came to the fork in the road and went straight”! Jay-Z
