Squid and His Squarebuilt Track

Squid was one of the first “OG messengers” in NYC who reached out to me. Still to this day, I have the utmost respect for the man. He embodies the hardworking NYC hustle but is never to busy to stop and chat for a minute. He’s split off from his old courier crew, now named Street Kings NYC and continues to push advocacy through Cyclehawk, Velo City and is the rep from Chrome in NYC.  I caught up with Kevin last week in NYC and shot some photos of his work bike, a custom Squarebuilt track bike.

Damn Straight. The trip to NYC wouldn’t have been the same if not for squids company. So positive and real. An inspiration to say the least. He and Ian here in Columbus were the behind the scenes guys leading to the RHC specific bike for Dan C.

I wanna see someone with a “sick fixie” talk trash on him running a brake.

He started running a front brake because of the NYPD’s crackdown on cyclists. I saw a video of him around that time where it was just a brake lever and it didn’t do anything. Now I see the brake is fully functional. Guess he’s using it now. The brake/no brake debate is silly anyways. Do whatever you want to your bike.

Here in Tokyo you can now receive a fine of upto 50,000 yen (600 dollars) for not having brakes.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police (faced with an increase in serious accidents involving bikes without brakes hitting pedestrians)
Started to clamp down ( no pun intended) last year.

If you’ve rode a bike on Tokyo streets you’ll probably think it is a good idea to clamp down on inexperienced riders with no brakes on their bikes.

Yo Thanks John! Always good to see you too.
I don’t use the brake but think it’s a good look
for the kids (and the NYPD haha!).

    • when I got stopped for not running a brake, I installed a front brake and mounted the lever on the fork.  Always hoped a cop would ask me if it worked so I could let ’em try.

      also, sick bike man!
