Abe Burmeister from Outlier at PSFK

Abe Burmeister from Outlier at PSFK

Having been friends with Abe and Tyler since the very first prototype Outlier pants, I can say that I’m extremely proud of their accomplishments. Here’s Abe talking at the recent PSFK Conference in NYC:

“In this talk from PSFK CONFERENCE NYC, Abe Burmeister explains how a punk-rock ethic helped him create a business building a new niche in a market he had no experience in. Abe just wanted a pair of pants he could both ride his bike and go to work in – and all his partner Tyler needed was a shirt that stayed fresh despite his pedal-powered commute. The Outlier co-founder describes how the duo paired intensive research in New York’s garment district with the connectivity of the web to create Outlier – a performance fashion business that only sells over the web.”

King Kog

King Kog

It’s hard to introduce this shop without talking about how they were one of the first track bike-specific shops in the US. At the time, you could count them on one hand and King Kog‘s been on people’s radar for almost 10 years. In recent years, King Kog went from a tiny space on an industrial block to a large, full-service bike shop, right off Graham avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. While they still cater to track bikes, King Kog also stocks vintage road bikes and cycling apparel. Chances are, if you’ve got a classic build to finish off, King Kog has that stem you’re looking for and maybe the matching jersey.

Kicking Around Kinfolk Studios in Brooklyn

Kinfolk Studios is a space that change every time I visit Brooklyn. I remember when Maceo and Ryan ambitiously signed a lease to the space and began the lengthy process of construction. They busted their asses for a year, getting the space ready. With the Kinfolk Studios bar and restaurant open and cracking, the design offices upstairs are bustling with new creative projects.

While most of the space was a bit cluttered with work, the stairwell and Maceo’s Kinfolk track provided more than enough inspiration to get some lens love. I still love that Kinfolk Brooks saddle…

One More Dosnoventa

One More Dosnoventa

The Dosnoventa Montecarlo, at first glance, looks like the Cannondale ’92 track bike. But this frameset uses Columbus Airplane tubing, a carbon fork (or steel) and a 1″ steerer. Its cousin, the Dosnoventa Detroit, has an integrated headset for those seeking modernity. They shortened the rear end and removed any brake hole drillings. Basically, if Canonndale took a return down memory lane, chances are, it’d look like this.

Blink / Steady Lights

Blink / Steady Lights

At this point, I get at least a dozen emails a week from people regarding Kickstarter projects. I usually sift through the ones I like and this week’s pick are the Blink / Steady Lights. I can get behind all of this. If and when they develop a USB-chargeable version, I’ll support it even more. Regardless, these look great and are made in Brooklyn, NY but are not cheap. The 2012 Red Hook Crit

The 2012 Red Hook Crit

With the media buzz following the Red Hook Crit, I wanted to wait a little bit to put up the rest of my photos. This is a big set, probably the biggest I’ve posted but my intention is to give all the racers a chance to grab their photo if they want. So these photos are free reign, just throw in a little credit. I wanted to thank Dave Trimble for throwing this event and Cinelli USA for making my attendance possible this year. Ok, enough chit chat, check out the photos!

You Stay Rad Hugo!

Hugo has been a cohort of mine in NYC for a few years now. He started Snap! Delivery and is always hanging around Affinity. I caught up with him while I was in NYC and got these two photos. Austin may be my home now but the Brooklyn community is still my family.

The 2012 Red Hook Crit Afterparty

The 2012 Red Hook Crit Afterparty

I feel like this party ruined me more than any other night in Brooklyn. The 2012 Red Hook Crit was a huge success and after the race, everyone headed over to The Bell House for the official after party. Let’s see, a bunch of hungry, dehydrated racers, good bourbon selection and a bunch of beer. It was a recipe for liver disaster. I even caught a few of the Mash dudes a little loose. Alex, you still owe me a drink!

Surly Party Bike

Reportage

Surly Party Bike

When I was in Brooklyn, this Surly Steamroller caught my eye one morning. The “battleship grey” models were my favorites and I always wanted one. This was before they got rid of the curvy stays and went onto the “poop brown” color that I had. Surly Steamrollers are still, to this day one of the best street fixed gears you can buy. Big tires, set up perfectly for SS CX and tough as hell.

This one however, was perfection. Gold Campagnolo BMX cranks, townie bars, big tires and from the looks of the empty Corona bottle, it’s an ideal party bike. Unfortunately, a rather surly truck driver parked in front of it before I could get a better shot of the pista cranks but so it goes.

Fitness with Kym Perfetto

Kym has really pushed her spin classes over the years. When I first met her, she raced alleycats and was incredibly fast on the street and now, she works at Soul Cycle where she has a client list filled with celebrities. I.e. she’s made a name for herself in NYC, one of the hardest working cities in the world. Congrats girl! You deserve it.

Dosnoventa Tokyo Carbon Fiber Track

Reportage

Dosnoventa Tokyo Carbon Fiber Track

We saw a few shots of the Dosnoventa track bikes in action during my Brooklyn Randomness post but I’ve been holding off on posting these photos up. Dosnoventa is a Barcelona-based company who have taken on making a track frame from the three materials of choice: carbon, steel and aluminum. The name translates to 290, or the bottom bracket height (29cm) for every bike in their line. The Tokyo is their carbon fiber model and this build was over-the-top to say the least. Rotor cranks, HED wheels and one bitchin’ paint job make this bike scream.

Wilis’ Daccordi Pista

Reportage

Wilis’ Daccordi Pista

If you’ve known Wilis from Milk Money and King Kog for any amount of time, you’ll know that he has a Daccordi’ction. He can’t pass up a good deal on these Italian steeds. While I was shooting some photos for my Shop Visit to King Kog (still to come), I took his Daccordi pista out for some lens love. The Campagnolo and Cinelli build paired with the monotone frame is one of the more subdued builds I’ve seen come from his stable but I like the simplicity here. Especially with the deep drop of the 3T bars and the Grammo stem.

Thomas Porter’s Splendid Cycles

I’m just going through some emails from the last few weeks and came across this gem. It’s a bit long but well worth the watch. Here’s a little background:

“Brooklyn resident William Thomas Porter builds wonderful – and really weird – bikes. “I wouldn’t call them mutants,” he says of his bike caricatures, “because that would make them sound ugly. It’s more like creating this… new splendid form.” We followed him around for a about a year documenting his projects and cajoling him into demonstrating the bikes’ awesomeness in a series of humorous, fast-paced vignettes.

Throughout the short Tom chats with good friend (and sometimes collaborator), Diego Guzman, about how and exactly why he does what he does.”

Swingbike freestyle is all the rage and the bounce bike sequences in McCarren Park are great!

The Boy Who Cried Checkpoint

Reportage

The Boy Who Cried Checkpoint

I’m always amazed how how many people are still into alleycats, especially in NYC. One morning, I was finishing up my coffee when this kid came flying up the sidewalk yelling “CHECKPOINT??!??!?!” “CHECKPOOOOINNNT!!!!!!”. I’d seen this happen before. It’s so sad. He was lost during a race. Brooklyn’s far from a difficult city to navigate, so I went over to ask if I could help. He replied that he saw an alleycat on Twitter and that the manifest was posted with the #fixiefamous hashtag. I didn’t have anything going on that day, so I agreed to follow him around town, as we looked for these “checkpoints”. Part of me knew someone was just messing with the wide-eyed, tattoo’d, pink fixie kid….

The following is an epic poem, read the image captions for the story.
