LBC in ATX

With the new Photosets formatting, I’ll be periodically re-upping older content. While some will just get filed back in the stacks, others, from multiple entries, will be dumped into a new post. The first Photoset Re-Up is from when Long Beach came to Austin to ride and film. It was a week of thrills and spills and these are still, to date, some of my favorite FGFS photos. I picked about 30 from the hundreds I shot that week. Enjoy.

I finally uploaded all of the previous photos from Matt Spencer in ATX up on Flickr. Most of them you’ve seen before but there are some extras in there. Head on over to my Flickr to check them out.

LBC in ATX Day 06

Day 06 was truncated by Corey’s accident but we still managed to get some clips and photos from riding in San Marcos. AJ’s been getting up lately and this wall hop into a cobbled bank came out so sick. Most of the San Marcos spots are bump to walls, ledges and other jib spots. Everyone put in work and regardless, it was a productive day.

After Day 04, we were all beat but we still drug our asses out of bed and rolled over to the park for a quick session. Zane wanted to interview AJ, since it was his last day here and Gus wanted to get one last session in but all we really did was watch the local BMX rippers throw down.

LBC in ATX Day 04

Day 03 was spent mostly indoors, due to the rain and when we did head out, it was for site-seeing in Hill Country and burgers. Come Day 04 of the LBC in ATX trip, we were all refreshed and actually got in a ton of riding. We started out at House Park and then moved to that ditch, before finishing out with a sketchy hip blast.

LBC in ATX Day 02

Day 02 was a bit slow when compared to Day 01. In the spirit of the old Slow Sunday videos, we went to one spot and everyone worked on their lines. Matt was bump-jumping and table toppin’ everything while AJ worked on his sprocket stall to 180’s.

It was a very relaxing day and as you saw, the night got rowdy.

LBC in ATX Day 01

Over the past few days, I’ve been housing and hanging out with the Long Beach guys. Corey, Matt, Gus and Zane all came to Austin to ride. Once we got ourselves organized, the first day we hung out at 5-hip. It’s always great to see how different riders approach the same spot we’ve been riding for over a year now. So many of my photos from riding BMX and FGFS in Austin have come from here and yet, people are always finding new lines.

Long Beach in ATX

Reportage

Long Beach in ATX

I gotta be honest, I don’t remember taking a lot of these photos for one reason or another. The main being I was fairly drunk most the time the Long Beach guys were in town. Then I opened up these two Recent Rolls: one color and one B&W. Some are from Austin and some are from San Marcos. I don’t even remember which cameras I shot these with but it was a sobering experience to see the shots of Pissy’s post-wreck condition. But let’s not focus on that too much because let’s face it, their trip was epic.

I can say, without a doubt that I’ve seen every fixed freestyle DVD out there and every time, they just get better. When Zane from Chop Em Down Films first emailed me, expressing an interest to come to Texas with a handful of riders to film for a new video magazine, I was stoked! Over the past few months, I’ve been hearing about him traveling to film with other talent. From Tokyo, to SF, Phoenix, Temecula, Long Beach and Los Angeles, Zane has been there, catching clips for Can’t Fool the Youth Volume 01.

With the premieres still unfolding around the globe, I don’t want to give too much away but I will say this: Can’t Fool the Youth is the most comprehensive fixed freestyle project I’ve seen. It captures all of the talent and even brings some new faces some much-needed exposure. It captures the daily lives of riders and maintains that “feel good” vibe that I enjoy so much. What Zane has pulled together in the first volume only has me more stoked for the second and the third and…

Learning Curves

Learning Curves

I mentioned yesterday that Cody Nutter gave me a little tutorial on color-correction recently. In 5 minutes, I began the process of learning curves. In the past, I’ve messed around with color curves but looking back at some of the photos, I cringe. They’re either too blue or too red and ultimately, they just look like a photo lab mixed the wrong chemicals when processing film. Andy from Fyxomatosis gave me the best advice anyone could give: the photo should look like it was taken with your eyes. With digital photography at an all-time high and apps like Instagram going viral, people love the nostalgia associated with a high-contrast, cross-processed image. But I’m not sure that’s where I want to go with my photos. Sure, this isn’t a rule but it’s a direction I want to stay clear of.

Back to the learning curves. The photo on the right is the original photo I posted of Matt Spencer during the LBC in ATX trip. The photo on the left is after balancing out the blacks and whites. Quite a difference huh?

CSK: Spencer

By now, you should know what CSK is and even if you haven’t bought stickers from them (which you should do), you can appreciate their riding. Here’s Matt Spencer‘s new video, filled with full cabs, nollie x-ups, switch 180s and general street tech. If I woulda known this was gonna drop, I would have held off on putting up the LBC in ATX re-up!

TREE: A Day in the Life with Clint Reynolds

If there is anything that’s more inspirational than this to watch this week, send it to me. Right now, this is as good as it gets. I’ve posted photos of Clint’s van before as well as his motorcycle and even a few shots of him riding. He’s one of my favorite BMX riders and has a vibe that I can get behind. Don’t miss this one! Congrats to TREE for putting such a solid team together.

Ride BMX had the exclusive on this and there’s a great reflection on the video over there, so check that out.

PiNP Week in Review 01.29.2012

This week saw a good amount of fixed freestyle videos, mixed in with some other gems. Check out the PiNP Week in Review:

01. SYD_
I’m in Sydney, doing my thing and this week, I’ll be visiting shops, going on rides and meeting many new people. Keep an eye on the blog and apologies for the strange posting schedule.

02. Wolf Drawn: LBC 2 ATX
Matt unleashed the beast this week, documenting the LBC 2 ATX trip. Unfortunately, now we have to carry a measuring tape with us when we ride.

03. 44RN 144#47 Raidô Contest
In Elder Futhark, an Old Norwegian language, Raidô means ride or journey. This contest wants you to share yours through a photo.

04. Jonathan Davis Into the Unknown
This dude rips it up to none other than Electric Wizard.

05. Riding the Long White Cloud
Our favorite skaters from days of yore got on some bikes for a little tour.

06. Beautiful Bicycle: Gus’ SE 26″ Fixed
SE’s new 26″ fixed frameset has been getting rad underneath Gus for the past few months. I gave it some lens love at House Park while he was visiting in Austin.

07. ILE Inside Line Equipment: Prime DSLR Backpack
The new bag from ILE takes on a smaller package, much like your Prime lenses.

08. Bmore Fixed: Druids Path
Bmore Fixed does their thing in the streets of Charm City.

09. Balhogs Wax
It’s wax, made from the fat of the swine and will turn any ledge into a shredding shrine.

10. Product Review: Laplander City Panniers
After weeks of use, I finally got around to shooting photos of Lauren’s Laplander City Panniers.
