2015 NAHBS: Mars Cycle ‘Cross

Casey Sussman from Mars Cycles‘ work has been featured here on the site before. Coincidentally, it was during last year’s NAHBS that I bumped into him on the street and shot his track bike. This year, he had a booth in the “rookie” hall and brought this icy cross bike.

With paint by Jordan Low, leather work by Mark Christian Bolick of Suture Saddles and a mix of Columbus tubing, including a stainless downtube with stainless blades, Casey’s work really stood out in the hall. Maybe that’s what landed him the People’s Choice award?

Dang, this is sweet! Saved as desktop.

    • Mars Cycles

      Thank you!

  • Dobry

Beautiful bike. It speaks for itself, but I’ll add that I like the drivetrain choice, if only for palindromatic purposes – MARS SRAM!

    • Mars Cycles

      Thank you.

  • Patrick Murphy

I can’t tell if it’s just the light playing tricks but it looks like he used different textures on the DT logo under the clear…maybe? Sick bike either way!

    • Mars Cycles

Downtube and fork blades are stainless, that is the stainless showing through.

Such an elegant detail. So good!

Wishbone seatstays on cross bikes should be mandatory. So pretty!

  • Tony Clifton

I like the Paragon stem clamp being used as the seatpost collar – very clever. But the seat stay pierced by the caliper bolt is just waiting to crack under all that torque…

    • Mars Cycles

Hi, the seatstay is reinforced internally and externally brazed with brass to the disc tab. This is probably the last place on this frame that will crack. Thanks for your concern though.

      • Tony Clifton

Well then, I stand corrected! Outstanding work.

Casey, what fork crown is that?

That thing looks like it fits faaaat tires! Loads a fun!

    • Mars Cycles

      Definitely fits 40c Nanos! thanks

does it shift ok? this is peculiar component selection. that derailleur isnt *supposed* to work with the 11 speed shifter. any reason you opted for that particular cable routing strategy? also, whats the deal with the spacers between the disc caliper and the adapter?

    • Mars Cycles

Shifts flawlessly. I very specifically picked the components to be cheap and easy to replace, as this bike will be ridden hard, and I can`t afford to replace expensive parts. Cable routing is fully internal to avoid dirt and junk and look clean. Most disc brakes use conical spacers like in a v brake pad to adjust their camber.

Pretty sweet, but only the rotors are places the wrong way.

    • Mars Cycles

I did this to not show tektro from the outside of the bike.
