Mash SF: Rainier Schaefer Jan 10, 2014

Leave it to Mash to put out a minute-long video that packs the stoke. Rainier is an exceptionally-strong rider and seeing him climb Fillmore Street like that is impressive!

  • Holler_Atcha_Soy

holy shit, i think i blew my knees out just watching that.

  • Patrick Murphy

I DROVE up that hill once, and it wasn’t easy. I’m not into power readings (taking a wild guess that he’s not either) but I bet if you slapped a meter on that bike it would blow up.

    • Zach Kahl

When you drove up the hill were you drunk? In what way was it difficult to drive up Fillmore?

      • Patrick Murphy

4 cylinder rental car, first time in SF and on anything that steep. likely nothing to a local, but it freaked me out.

        • Adam Carter

i can agree with the difficulty driving up this hill. unfamiliar city, borrowed car, people parked on the street on both sides, crazy grade… etc. it wasn’t fun, and it was intimidating.

          • Zach Kahl

Sometimes I wonder how some people can ride bikes if they can’t even drive a car..

          • Adam Carter

I’ll leave you to ponder your existential dilemma of inane proportions.

          • Patrick Murphy

Sometimes I wonder how people can derail a message board by dissecting a completely on-topic statement of praise for the subject. And my riding is just fine. No training wheels.

          • Zach Kahl

This isn’t a message board brah. You’re maybe derailing yourself in the conversation. Cheers to that!

          • Ben Gee Molina

You would have trouble walking up that hill.

          • Zach Kahl

I have two legs and unlike you fools, I rode today.

          • dontcoast

            smellz like troll

          • dontcoast

Please tell me you mean “sometimes i wonder how people can drive cars if they can’t ride a bike?”

            F%#$~# car-centricity.

          • Zach Kahl

Not sure how that is confused. You don’t need balance to drive a car, and you don’t have the power to push a bike. It’s all relative.

          • Ben Gee Molina

            Don’t feed the troll

          • ben ske

            just look at this

            oh my god

      • http://theradavist.com/ John Watson

        In any shitty 4 cylinder.

Here is the Strava segment for those who are curious:

    Measly ~23%.

  • FRMHNT

Would be even more impressive (or not) if we knew the gearing used in this video.

    44/16?

    • Matthew Lew

      44/17

      • FRMHNT

        For real?

        • Matthew Lew

Yup has the ratio in the Vimeo link.

          • FRMHNT

Then this is not that impressive.

          • VHMNTLY

            Try it on 44/17 then.

    Brutal.

  • kasual

+1 for dodging that car, i’d probably zone out and get run over.

  • schue113

    Track name please!

  • fred

22% grade! holy crap!!! This dude is a monster.

  • Nathaniel Ng

That is not a fun hill to climb on fixed.

  • campirecord

Does nothing for me, total boredom

    • http://theradavist.com/ John Watson

You either: a) never rode track bikes b) never tried climbing that hill

      • campirecord

No and No, I’m just not into tractors with Ferrari engines or track bikes going at 45 rpms. I’m not against it, I just don’t see the point. The beauty of this site is all cycling for all purpose at anytime. If I was a starving student, I would take my track bike up Fillmore for the free bacon at the top. Its just not utilitarian… you know. Unless of course I live on top of Fillmore by the sea with my family of 6 (I fled SF 3 years ago) or want my triceps to burst in flames.

        • http://theradavist.com/ John Watson

Gotcha! Your first comment wasn’t nearly as insightful. ;-)

  • trackosaurusrex

The most impressive thing here is that he’s wearing Vans.

    • mostimpressive

No, the most impressive thing here is that he’s using flat bars.

      • trackosaurusrex

        That’s not impressive at all.
