In the Know – Connor Fearon

Oh my god. I don’t know what is my favorite part of this video, the riding or the sounds coming from Connor’s tires as they hook up. So good.

Well Used: Gevenalle GX Shifters for Mountain Bike Derailleurs
Elephant Bikes National Forest Explorer with Gevenalle Shifting

For some reason, when Gevenalle first launched, I didn’t want to like their shifting mechanisms. They just seemed too contrived. A solution for a problem that didn’t exist. Perhaps it was their marketing, claiming to be designed for cyclocross racing. Sure, I read the product descriptions, the PR, looked at the photos but I still wasn’t convinced.

It wasn’t until I began to see the Gevenalle shifters on touring bikes that my interest was piqued. “Now that makes sense” I thought. Not running traditional road shifters on a touring bike is completely reasonable. The same can be said for barcons or downtube shifters. Why take your hand off the lever to shift? Sure. I get that.

The Gevenalle shifting system I recently spent time with is the GX shifters for mountain bike derailleurs. More specifically, a shifting system ideal for long-cage, dirt tourers like the Elephant NFE. (more…)

TDSCT

It’s that time of year again. Sean from Team Dream is throwing his annual #TeamDreamSunsetChasingTeam contest on Instagram. The concept is simple: chase a sunset, shoot a photo and tag it #TeamDreamSunsetChasingTeam. Here’s the rundown:

“Here…We…Go! This rounds Sunset Chasing Photo Contest prizes are SOOO insane (like so insane that these aren’t even all of them because we couldn’t fit anything else in the photo). We have loads great stuff ready for you to win! Some of the grand prizes include bags from @missionworkshop / @acresupply, glasses from @oakleybike, kits from us here @teamdreamteam / @endocustoms & the “ultra grand prize” is a set of Ksyrium SLR wheels (plus shoes) from @maviccycling.

We will be picking a total of 15 winners and 1 Grand Prize winner. You now have 5 days to get out and post your best #TeamDreamSunsetChasingTeam images! Just use the hashtag on your photos to participate. The only rule is that the photo must be new/original and be yours. Winners will be chosen by instagram celebrity guest judges (to be announced on a later date in order to protect their own safety) and will be announced once the contest ends. Images will be judged on concept, composition & overall level of fun (photoshopping in a Bobcat wouldn’t hurt either.

Good Luck everyone. The deadline is this Tuesday at midnight PST..Now go out there and get em’!”

Davis Phinney and Moments of Victory

I really loved the video of Taylor Phinney from last month and this video featuring his father, Davis Phinney is superb.

“Davis Phinney is an esteemed American cyclist and Olympic bronze medalist. Throughout the 1980’s and early 1990’s, Phinney was a familiar face on the podium, racking up 328 victories (a US record) before his retirement from professional cycling. Diagnosed with young onset Parkinson’s disease in 2000 at age 40, he went on to establish the non-profit Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinson’s in his hometown of Boulder, Colorado, USA. This biographical short, featuring appearances by Connie Carpenter, Taylor Phinney and Kelsey Phinney, chronicles Davis’ professional career, Parkinson’s diagnosis, and transition from athlete to advocate and inspirational role model.”

The 2015 Speedvagen Australia Fit Tour
Speedvagen_Australia_Fit_tour

Hey Aussies! Get ready, the 2015 Speedvagen Australia Fit Tour is heading your way!

“Sacha White and The Vanilla Workshop are preparing to take off on the second leg of the Speedvagen Fit Tour. This trip takes Speedvagen to Australia, specifically Sydney and Melbourne. In addition to fitting new Speedvagen customers, there will be rides in each city as well as evening events open to the public. Fresh off the success of the California Fit Tour, extending the program is a natural progression, reaching customers that would normally not make it to Portland for a personal fitting with Sacha.

There are limited spots available, as each fit takes 2-3 hours. Spending this much time working with each customer allows Sacha to understand each rider’s unique strengths, needs, and limitations. The end result is your dream bike, completely tuned to your riding style. Learn more about the Australia Fit Tour or schedule a fit session with Sacha here.”

Sydney Dates: August 24th – 30th at the Rapha Cycle Club
Melbourne Dates: Sept 1st – 6th at Shifter Bikes

Mission Workshop: Black MultiCam Sanction with Arkiv Hardware
Sanction_Multicam_black-02

I cannot get enough of this material. Designed and manufactured in the USA, black MultiCam may be a bit fashion-centric but it’s so subtle that it’s innocuous. Mission Workshop continues to trickle it down its line with this limited edition Sanction rucksack but they added a hi-vis orange waterproof ripstop nylon liner and their patented Arkiv closure system.

The Sanction is the younger sibling to the Fitzroy, the larger sized rucksack but has all the necessary space for a quality day pack.

Made in the USA with a lifetime warranty. Scoop one up at Mission Workshop.

The Mash and Cinelli Work Frames are Now Shipping
Mash_work-02

Whether you’re into messengering, street fixed gear races or even singlespeed cyclocross, the new Mash Work Frames will fit the bill. Born on the streets and trails of SF, the Work Frame’s versatility is its most shining asset. As Mash’s first steel frame with Cinelli, the Work Frames were born from Chas Christiansen’s idea to have one frame to rule them all. Rather than painting the frames, Mash went with a raw, with a clear powdercoat, which will most definately patina over time with heavy use. These frames are spaced at 100mm and 120mm, with clearances for a 35mm tire and an english threaded bottom bracket.

The Work Frames are in stock now at Mash for $875.
