Retrofitz: Turn any Sneaker into an SPD Cycling Shoe Apr 2, 2012

Is this the answer everyone’s been looking for? Could be. Retrofitz makes these SPD kits, allowing you to cut up your sneakers of choice and add a cleat-mount. While they don’t sell the part kit outside of Santa Cruz, you can buy some ready-to-go conversions at their site. So is this the answer? Maybe, if that’s what you were looking for. But I din’t think the solution is as simple as this. Not unless you add a high-density nylon flank to the insole. But it’s a start.

Cool idea for the do-it-yourelfer, but seems like buying the designed-for options from chrome or mission are obvious choices unless you’re militantly loyal to chucks or sambas.

The Retrofitz system does include an injection molded nylon “mid-sole plate”  (aka “flank” made of Nylon ST801, the same stuff Sidi soles are made of (when they aren’t made of carbon).

Why only sell these in Santa Cruz, pisses me off something fierce.

Probably so he can show you how to do it. It’s a huge liability to send these off to people and say “FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS” because no one reads anymore.

Existing SDP sneakers are not handsome or elegant by any means. This looks like an awesome solution & interesting DIY project.
