I feel like since moving to Austin in December of last year, I’ve been here so little that I’ve yet to soak in the dense racing scene. Starting last Tuesday, I started covering the Dirt Derby and last night I headed out to PURE Austin Driveway Series by Holland Racing series. Like the Dirt Derby, the Driveway Series takes place on a course designed for motor vehicles, which offers an interesting contrast to the normal crit course. Unlike Portland’s Giro, Austin officials won’t allow races in the downtown area, which pushes the series out to the Driveway, a few miles from the city.

I got there in time for registration and watched the women’s and the B class race. My good friend Jon Awesome was racing for his first time, and It was great to see these guys hammer it out. I’d still like to see someone rally for having a downtown crit. That’s the only way to go!
