Stages Futura from Adam Bryce on Vimeo.

I was never really into Futura‘s work but I do respect him as an artist. He’s one of those OG NYC guys who was riding track bikes before most people reading this now.

Adam Bryce over at slamxhype got to interview the artist, ex-messenger and self-proclaimed “cyclotourist”. Watch as Futura speaks about the forthcoming Stages09 exhibition and what riding a fixed gear means to him.

Oh yeah, no foot-retention!

    how does he stop?

  • hellkat kris

ummm yeah … i am second guessing his experience riding fixed. why the hell would you want to ride fixed without straps or cages on your pedals? Total rookie move in my opinion. that bike has hardly ever been ridden. you can tell because the drops are still completely clean with no chipped paint from taking the wheel on and off. Okay, so it may just be new, i’ll give him that but c’mon, you gotta have foot retention to fully experience riding fixed.

And it takes a lot for me to slam FUTURA. Been looking at his art since I picked up “Subway Art” in 92.

  • You go tell that to all the Jamaicans who’ve been doing it for years… Plenty of messengers and other old-school riders here in NYC have been riding in traffic without foot-retention.

The difference between them and the actual rookies is they have bike control.

  • mike

Winter time, cheap Bianchi, Nitto drops, flat pedals and Timberland boots, thats my way since 84′!
And there was this one guy from T&T who came to NYC in 79′, I leave this uncommented…

  • oisin

Does anyone else think that that bike looks unbelievably ugly and uncomfortable?

    Please shut up

  • Mike

You can ride fixed without foot retention. It might not be my first choice but more power to you if you want to. And I’d hesitate to call out Futura as a rookie.

  • kixor

    Get some foot retention guy!

  • wow. the CYCLE GEEKS need to CHILL. this isn’t about me and my FIXIE. I’ve got numerous frames&components and SPD systems to bore the entire community. this is about STAGES09 and helping raise money for the LANCE ARMSTRONG FOUNDATION. I would hope that before anyone puts their seat in the CRITICISM POST . . . they are also willing to give time&money to something other than themselves.

  • yeah seriously guys. relax.

  • Alucard Belmont

that guy is nuts. riding with no clips. no breaks.

  • antihero1972

I think this guy is rad, I have no idea who he is, but helping the foundation and all, who can bash that. And more props to you for riding without retention i bet this guy has mad control and experience. Jamaaicans riding without foot retention sounds awesome, NYC seems way cool such a diversity I got get out more and see the country I feel trapped here in SLC everytime I leave and go somewhere else I realize how dull thisa place is no diversity no culture. Big ups to you Futura.

  • MR. ANTIHERO: thank you for your kind words sir. however . . . I am not JAMAICAN. and as BIZARRE as STEREOTYPES go if I didn’t have the HEADGEAR you’d swear I was NATIVE AMERICAN. hahaha. no PUN intended. but put that in your pipe&smoke it. I’ve been to SLC and I had a BLAST. one of the most HORRIFIC snow storms on personal record. and REMEMBER . . . foot retention is the NEW phenomenon make sure you’re properly fitted.

    shifting GEARS . . . http://www.flickr.com/photos/futuradosmil/tags/fixedframe/

  • antihero1972

Futura, I was referring to prollys post (see above), I was not saying you are Jamaican. Anyways yes riding here in crazy snow storms is way fun.

  • si señor. words&meanings LOST in TRANSLATION.

  • I am a rookie actually, I bought my fixie from trackstar when they were only 2years old bro. I have a super fine Cinelli MASH frame with campy record top to bottom, although i don’t ride in manhattan…i do food delivery in williamsburg at least once a week and that gives me all the experience i need. I apologize for hating, this is all about giving love to those who need it most, certainly Futura knows what he is doing, i respect that. And again I apologize , I am just a rookie, so my bad.

  • MR. HELLKAT: my initial response was GENERIC and didn’t/doesn’t reflect on any one specific comment. I know the FIXATION POLICE have quotas and I admire your apology.

  • hellkat kris

hah … touché hombres. Damn, that was not my intention to come off like a douche. Was not trying to call Futura a rookie. I spoke without knowing the facts. My bad. Foot in mouth. Much respect, Futura. You’ve been a hero of mine for years, I don’t know why I questioned that.

And for the record, that wasn’t me above, but that shit made me laugh.

Now I gotta get back to being a rookie and delivering food.

  • yes sir . . . that COMMENT did seem to be COMPUTER generated. hahahaha. at least the COMMUNITY found the COMMUTE to COMEDY. people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

  • got your back….I concur. Does not compute,
    ;)
